Poland Historical society meetings are open to the public

Neighbors | Submitted.At the July meeting of the Poland Historical Society, several Poland residents shared stories about their ancestors’ settling in Poland as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve in the 1700’s. The first panel of people to talk were, from left, Joan Smith, Elinor Zedaker, Sue Holloway, Dick Hill, Bob Eich, Mary Ina Jones, Sara Strock, and Dave Smith.

Several Poland residents shared stories about their ancestors’ settling in Poland as Town 1, Range 1 in the Connecticut Western Reserve in the 1700s during the July meeting of the Poland Historical Society.

They shared stories about their lives and what it was like growing up and living in a town full of interesting history. Those on the panel were Becky Bennett, Gwen Guiraud, Ed Virostek, Pepper McGarry, Bob Zedaker, Dean Worsencroft, Dick Hill, Mary Ina Jones, Sara Strock, Bob Eich and Cloy Stewart.

Others at the meeting also added stories about their memories of the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s. They reminisced about swimming in and ice skating on Yellow Creek. The creek was the center of activity for young people. Some lived on dairy farms and delivered milk in Poland.

Also discussed were the Poland Country Club, polo games, White Saddle, and Karl Granger, who occasionally shared his home with his horse.

“The Little Red Schoolhouse – Past and Present” will be the topic for the Aug. 21 program at 7:30 p.m. at the Little Red Schoolhouse, 4515 Center Road (Route 224) at the Struthers Road intersection in Poland Township.

The meeting is open to the public.
