Boardman High School senior MyKale White realized her dream of becoming an actress when she participated in the International ARTS Showcase in Orlando, Fla. June 27-July 27.

She earned first place in TV commercial, second in monologue, third in improvisations and best overall female actress.

“I was just like, ‘wow.’ I couldn’t believe that they would choose me out of all these people. I was numb. There were so many people there and then I got put into the adult bracket. I thought they were more experienced. I never thought it was going to be easy. I just was going to go out and try my best. When I got on stage I thought I was just going to make my hardest critics laugh, which is my family,” White said.

Her lifelong passion for acting and participation in several school organizations, such as Speech and Drama prepared her for an opportunity of a lifetime. Encouragement from speech coach, Eric Simone, helped White develop the confidence she needed to perform well on stage.

“I’ve been acting in school since I was 5 years old and I’m in speech and drama at school. Speech and debate really helped to prepare me. Eric Simone really motivated and prepared me. I feel like he just stood out and was really helpful,” White said.

Countless opportunities are presenting themselves for White, but she remains humble by staying close to her family. She hopes one day she can help buy a building for a family soup kitchen.

“My ultimate goal is to get enough money to get a soup kitchen for my family. My family, my mom and most of all my dad, who passed away in 2007, are always in the back of my mind. Honestly, helping is in my blood. I’ve always been taught to give back,” White said.
