Canfield 10U girls softball wins tourney

Neighbors | Submitted.The Canfield girls softball 10U district team defeated Newton Falls 9-2 in the championship, which was held July 2-7. The Canfield 10U girls softball team recently won the Crestview tournament. They defeated Newton Falls 9-2 in the championship. The Cards went undefeated for the week, outscoring its opponents 54-15.

In the first pool play game, Canfield beat South Range, 12-0. Mary Gomez pitched a one-hit shutout and added a home run at the plate. Kalin Kovach also homered for the Cards. Gomez, Kovach, and Kate Ross all had multiple hits in the game.

In the next pool play game, Canfield beat Poland, 12-3. Madi Kelly was strong on the mound and picked up the win with some relief help from Kovach. Emily Smith, Abby Havrilla and Kylie Gross all had two hits, while Havrilla made numerous great plays at second base.

During the first elimination game, the Lady Cards beat South Range, 12-2. Gomez pitched three scoreless innings for the win with mound help from Kelly and Kovach. Ross, Smith, Kelly, Havrilla, Jenna Troxil and Camyrn Kohout all had two hits in the game. The defense was led by Brooke Crissman and Aiden Orlovsky.

In the semifinals, the squad beat Poland again with a thrilling come-from-behind 9-8 walk-off victory. Trailing 7-2 after three innings, they battled back against the Bulldogs and extreme heat to score the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Ross scored the winning run on a hit from Kovach. Kelly and Gomez combined for the win on the mound. Orlovsky and Gross led the defense.

During the final, Kelly picked up the win with a 9-2 victory over Newton Falls. Kelly and Gomez combined on a one-hitter with great catching from Troxil. Gomez added two triples and five RBIs. Crissman and Orlovsky also had multiple hits in the win.
