Canfield girls golf wins invitational

The Canfield girls golf team won the George Valentine Invitational at the Ashland Brookside Golf Course on Aug. 20. Canfield ranked first with an overall score of 318. Leading the team were Michele Whiteleather with a score of 76, Kerra Loomis (79), Christina Cooper (80) and Lianna Tucci (83).

Other teams at the invitational were Ashland (338), Medina (339), Dover (340), Lexington (347), Strasburg (356), Claymont (357), Brunswick (375), Magnificat (402), Medina B (405), Garaway (406), Mansfield (412), North Ridgeville (415), Marlington (436) and Warren JFK (439).

Canfield alum named Navy volleyball captain

Senior Kelsey Owen will serve as captain of the Navy volleyball team during the program’s 2012 campaign. Owen appeared in all but one of Navy’s Patriot League matches during the 2011 season and took to the court in 24 of the team’s 29 matches played over the course of the full year. She dropped in 18 service aces last season, a tally that ranks second on the squad among returning players.

Owen is an English major that has earned placement on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in each of her three completed seasons and has been named to the USNA Superintendent’s List three times. Owen is a 2008 Canfield High School graduate.

Canfield places second at tournament

The Canfield girls golf team placed second at the Jackson Invitational on Aug. 13 with a score of 341. Massillon Jackson won with a team score of 311. Playing for Canfield were Landrie Grace, leading the team with a score of 73, Cassie Pantelas with a 74, Kelsey Schutt with a 79, and Louisa Engelhardt with an 85. Other teams competing at the invitational were Hathaway Brown, Massillon Gold, Poland, Mooney, Hubbard, Stow and Warren JFK.

Canfield girls golf defeats Howland

Canfield girls golf defeated Howland, 173-180 at Diamond Back Golf Course on Aug. 14. Leading the team were Michele Whiteleather with a score of 41, Christina Cooper (42), Olivia DeMartino (43) and Lianna Tucci (47).

Canfield places fourth at tournament

The Canfield girls golf team placed fourth overall with a score of 346 at a tournament at the Legends of Massillon Golf Course. Leading the team was Christina Cooper with a score of 81, followed by Michele Whiteleather with an 85, Kerra Loomis with an 87 and Olivia DeMartino with a score of 93.

Youngstown Orthopaedic Saturday sports clinic

Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates’ Saturday sports clinics, geared specifically to fall sports student-athletes in need of immediate attention to sports injuries, will kick off its 2012 season today. The clinics run from 9-11 a.m. every Saturday throughout the high school sports season.

These clinics are open to players involved in football, volleyball, soccer, golf and other high school and college sports. They are held at the practice’s Building A at the northwest corner of Tippecanoe Road and Boardman-Canfield Road in Canfield. More information is available at www.youngstownortho.com.

Canfield accepting nominations for Hall of Fame

Canfield High School is taking nominations for the next class of the school’s athletic Hall of Fame. Nominations are being solicited from the public for former boy and girl CHS athletes from the class of 2002 and earlier who distinguished themselves at Canfield and/or afterward as well. Deserving contributors/supporters from the coaching ranks or community at-large are eligible, too.
