Canfield 38th annual “Show of Bands” is Tuesday

Canfield High School will host its 38th annual “Show of Bands” on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the high school football stadium. In addition to selections from the Cardinal Marching Band, this event will also feature such local marching bands as Boardman, Poland, Struthers, Austintown and West Branch.

Canfield open houses scheduled

Canfield Schools will be hosting open houses for the upcoming 2012-13 school year. On Monday, Canfield Village Middle School will have its open house for grades seven and eight at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday will be the Hilltop Elementary open house at 6 p.m., as well as the C.H. Campbell Elementary open house for kindergarten at 4 p.m. and grades first through fourth at 6 p.m. On Sept. 6, Canfield Village Middle School will have its open house for grades five and six at 6:30 p.m. Finally, Canfield High School will host an open house on Sept. 20 at 6 p.m.

Baby Brilliant event to happen in Canfield

The Canfield library will host a Baby Brilliant event on Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months and includes 20 minutes of language enrichment, including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

The Canfield library will be reading developmentally-appropriate books, singing songs and rhymes, finger plays and offering other activities that will help children (ages 2-3) become successful readers every Wednesday in September at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Fun time for 4’s and 5’s

There will be developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader at the Canfield library every Tuesday in September at 1:30 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Gotta move storytime

There will be a fun and interactive storytime where children can dance and wiggle all that energy out at the Canfield library on Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. This is an active story time for young and restless children ages 2-5. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Guess ‘n go at the library

Guess the number of items in the jar at the Canfield library during regular business hours during the month of September. The closest guess wins. This event if for children of all ages.

Lego my library set

Children age 6 and up can meet at Canfield Library from 6-8 p.m. on Sept. 11 to create Lego designs. The event lasts approximately two hours. Legos will be provided.

Tales to tails at library

Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading at the Canfield library on Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. School-age readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Bring a book of your choice. Dogs are provided by K-9 for Compassion, registered Delta society therapy dogs. Sign-up is required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Canfield library.

Monstrous art contest to be hosted

First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16. To coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome. You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County. Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork. Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award. Contest begins Sept. 1 and entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Duct tape couture

Stop by the library on Sept. 17 at 2:30 p.m. to make some super fashionable duct tape creations. Bring your friends and the library will provide the duct tape. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Cross the finish line

Think you know young adult fiction? See if you can identify the title of the book from just the novel’s last sentence during regular business hours at the Canfield library throughout the month of September. If you know your lines, you could win a prize. The event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Free ACT/SAT math help

The Canfield Library is hosting a free ACT/SAT math review program on Sept. 4 at 6:30 p.m. A YSU mathematics professor will review some test material and answer tough math questions. Space is limited, so sign-up is required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Canfield library. This is for teens in grades 7-12.

Coupon swap at the library

A coupon swap will be hosted by the Canfield library on Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons or learning new tips from other coupon-clippers.

Women’s book discussion club to meet

The Canfield women’s book discussion group will meet every third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. If you are interested in joining a book club or attending a Conversation Salon, contact the Development Office at 330-740-6086 for more information.

A free blood pressure check by the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association will be offered at the Canfield library on Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.

Libraries closed for Labor Day

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Labor Day, Sept. 3. Austintown, Boardman, and Poland libraries will be open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays beginning on Sept. 9.

Vendors needed for festival and craft show

Vendor/crafter space is still available for the Shepherd of the Valley–Poland Family Fall Festival and craft show. This year’s event will feature an array of outdoor activities for the whole family, including Friendship Hill horse carriage rides, bounce around, face painting, carnival games, music, concessions, bake sale, auctions, prizes and more.

The festival and craft show will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 Western Reserve Road). Interested crafters/vendors can call Shepherd of the Valley-Poland at 330-726-7110, extension 0. Funds raised at this event will support resident activities.

School of Autism needs back-to-school supplies

The Potential Development Program’s School of Autism will be holding a back-to-school supply drive throughout the month of August. The items collected will be used in the kindergarten through eighth grade classes during the upcoming school year. Some of the items needed for the upcoming school year include crayons, colored pencils, #2 pencils, pens, paper, tissues, construction paper, scissors, 2 pocket folders, glue sticks and rulers. Donations can be dropped off at the School of Autism, 880 E. Indianola Ave. Youngstown, between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Rod and gun club hosts Conservation Day

Lowellville Rod and Gun Club is holding its first Conservation Day today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. It includes fishing, archery, boating and shooting with medals and prizes awarded. There will also be wildlife exhibits, informational displays, special guests from area agencies, and free refreshments. Participants must provide their own fishing equipment, but bait will be provided. For information, call John at 330-757-9020.

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room.
