St. James’ Episcopal Church to host cavatelli dinner

St. James’ Episcopal Church in Boardman will host its annual St. Rocco’s-style cavatelli and meatball dinner on Aug. 26 from 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The food will be prepared by the original cooks of the former St. Rocco’s Episcopal Church in Youngstown, which closed in 2007.

Take out will be available. Meal prices are $8 for adults (12 and older); $4 for children ages 6-11; 5 years and under eat free. The church is located at 7640 Glenwood Avenue, Boardman. For more information, contact the church office at 330-758-2727 or e-mail secretary@stjamesboardman.com.

Baby Brilliant event to happen in Boardman

The Boardman library will host a Baby Brilliant event on Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months and includes 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

The Boardman library will be reading developmentally-appropriate books, singing songs and rhymes, finger plays and offering other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader every Wednesday in September at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

It’s a royal affair at the library

Arrive at the Boardman library on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. dressed in costume as a knight or a princess to the medieval tournament with stories and games. Program will last one hour and will honor top readers from the summer reading program. Children of all ages will make an edible “dragon egg” craft. Preschoolers must attend with an adult. Fun time for 4’s and 5’s

There will be developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader at the Boardman library every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Make and play-it tween tournament

Make a yarn yo-yo and a ladder golf game at the Boardman library on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. and challenge your friends. This one-hour program is open to students in grades 4-6 and they will “Crown a Champion.”

Martino motorsports at the Boardman Library

Drivers Tom and Ryan Martino will have a special story time presentation at the Boardman library on Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. They will sign autographs and read to the children. You can also check out their race car dragster in the parking lot.

Monstrous art contest to be hosted

First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16 and to coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome. You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County. Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork. Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award. Contest begins Sept. 1 and entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Teen advisory board meeting

Check out the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting on Sept. 5 at 6:30 p.m. The TAB meets the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman, Library. Newcomers are always welcome. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Jigsaw puzzle swap

Done with your jigsaw puzzle and want to try another? The Boardman library will be hosting a puzzle swap at 5 p.m. on Sept. 12. Join fellow jigsaw enthusiasts and swap puzzles. This event is sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC.

Friends of the Boardman library meeting

The Boardman Friends of the Library meeting and presentation, “Observations in Art and Life” with Dr. Lou Zona, Director, Butler Institute of American Art on Wick Avenue, will take place on Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library.

Library books for Nook users

Bring your Nook to the Boardman library on Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. and the librarians will show you how to download eBooks from the library’s digital catalog. Space is limited so sign-up required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Boardman library.

Get you blood pressure checked

Blood pressure screenings by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will be offered at the Boardman library on Sept. 4 from 12:30-3 p.m.

Libraries closed for Labor Day

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Labor Day, Sept. 3. Austintown, Boardman, and Poland libraries will be open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays beginning on Sept. 9.

Vendors needed for festival and craft show

Vendor/crafter space is still available for the Shepherd of the Valley–Poland Family Fall Festival and craft show. This year’s event will feature an array of outdoor activities for the whole family, including Friendship Hill horse carriage rides, bounce around, face painting, carnival games, music, concessions, bake sale, auctions, prizes and more.

The festival and craft show will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 Western Reserve Road). Interested crafters/vendors can call Shepherd of the Valley-Poland at 330-726-7110, extension 0. Funds raised at this event will support resident activities.

School of Autism needs back-to-school supplies

The Potential Development Program’s School of Autism will be holding a back-to-school supply drive throughout the month of August. The items collected will be used in the kindergarten through eighth grade classes during the upcoming school year. Some of the items needed for the upcoming school year include crayons, colored pencils, #2 pencils, pens, paper, tissues, construction paper, scissors, 2 pocket folders, glue sticks and rulers. Donations can be dropped off at the School of Autism, 880 E. Indianola Ave. Youngstown, between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Chalk it up to reading

The Boardman library will have an event for chalk stories and drawing activities outside at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. This event is fun for the whole family. If it rains, the program will be held in the meeting room.

Social media marketing meeting set

Tyler Clark from the Youngstown Business Incubator is the presenter for this program to be held at the Boardman library on Monday at 6:30 p.m. The term “social media” comprises a number of tools, including blogs, Twitter feeds and Facebook pages. Learn what combination of these tools is appropriate to help you reach your business goals and what comprises the audience for each of the social media tools, including how to convert readers and viewers to repeat customers.

Rod and gun club hosts Conservation Day

Lowellville Rod and Gun Club is holding its first Conservation Day today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. It includes fishing, archery, boating and shooting with medals and prizes awarded. There will also be wildlife exhibits, informational displays, special guests from area agencies, and free refreshments. Participants must provide their own fishing equipment, but bait will be provided. For information, call John at 330-757-9020.

Local doctor offers free health lectures

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room.
