Baby Brilliant event to happen in Austintown

The Austintown library will host Baby Brilliant events every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months and includes 20 minutes of language enrichment, including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

The Austintown library will be reading developmentally-appropriate books, singing songs and rhymes, finger plays and offering other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader every Wednesday in Sepember at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Fun time for 4’s and 5’s

There will be developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader at the Austintown library every Wednesday in September at 11 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Family story time yoga

Fly like a butterfly, roar like a lion and swim like a fish as yoga comes to life at the Austintown library Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. Read simple stories and act them out in basic yoga poses and stretches. No previous yoga experience needed. Wear comfortable clothing; you may bring a beach towel or yoga mat. This event is for children in grades K-6, but adults will be active participants.

Gotta move at the Austintown library

This event is for caregivers and young children, ages 2-5. Everyone will move their bodies in various ways to encourage brain development and to associate positive feelings with language learning at the Austintown library every Tuesday in September at 11 a.m. Children with special needs are always welcome. Guess ‘n go at the library

Guess the number of items in the jar at the Austintown library during regular business hours all during the month of September. The closest guess wins. This event if for children of all ages.

Play with an iPad

Parents should call 330-744-8636 and ask for an Austintown librarian to discuss your child’s session with an iPad. They will ask for the subject area you would like to explore with your child and schedule a twenty minute session on Sept. 22, starting at 9:30 a.m. During your personal appointment, the librarian will briefly demonstrate two specially selected apps and leave the rest of the time for you and your child to interact and explore together. Use the library’s iPad or bring your own. Registration is required, and space is limited. This event is for kids from age 4 to those in sixth grade. Child must be accompanied by an adult.

Monstrous art contest to be hosted

First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16 and to coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome. You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County. Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork. Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award. Contest begins Sept. 1 and entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Friends of the Austintown library meeting

The Friends of the Austintown library meeting and presentation, featuring Ron Elkins, a Poland resident who retired from the Foreign Service after 24 years as a Special Agent with the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security, will take place on Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. Elkins will talk about his experiences in service, including his last assignment with the State Department was as Deputy of the International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest, Hungary, being an officer in the 11th Special Forces Group (Airborne) which was housed in the Army Reserve Unit in Youngstown until it was deactivated in 1992, and earning his commission through the Army ROTC program at YSU in 1982.

Libraries closed for Labor Day

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Labor Day, Sept. 3. Austintown, Boardman, and Poland libraries will be open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays beginning on Sept. 9.

Immaculate Heart of Mary to host trunk sale

The Immaculate Heart of Mary will host a “Treasures in Your Trunk Sale,” sponsored by its social concerns group, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sept. 15. The sale will take place in the church parking lot, 4500 Norquest Blvd, Austintown. Vendor spaces are available for early registrations at $10 per space and money must be received by Sept. 13. There are 100 spaces available.

Vendors may register for $15 the day of the sale. No refunds will be given for any reason. Take your own table (up to 8 feet) for setting up in front of your trunk. Homemade baked goods, food and beverages will be on sale as well. A used book sale will take place in the Parish Center at the same time.

Vendors needed for festival and craft show

Vendor/crafter space is still available for the Shepherd of the Valley–Poland Family Fall Festival and craft show. This year’s event will feature an array of outdoor activities for the whole family, including Friendship Hill horse carriage rides, bounce around, face painting, carnival games, music, concessions, bake sale, auctions, prizes and more.

The festival and craft show will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 Western Reserve Road). Interested crafters/vendors can call Shepherd of the Valley-Poland at 330-726-7110, extension 0. Funds raised at this event will support resident activities.

Fitch Class of 1977 to host 35th reunion

The Austintown Fitch Class of 1977 will host its 35th class reunion on Labor Day weekend. Fitch Band Night to be Monday

Thre Austintown Fitch Band Night is Monday at the Fitch High School football field. Show your support for your local high school band and musicians at this event while seeing shows from other schools around the area as well. The music starts at 7 p.m.

Arts and crafts show set for September

An arts and crafts show will be held Sept. 16 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (set-up is from 8-10:30 a.m.) at Austintonwn Township Park on Kirk Road. Entries are accepted for crafts, photography, pencil/ink drawings and paintings in oils, watercolor or acrylics. All works must be made by the artist or craftsman; no kits will be accepted.

The entry fee is $20 for an indoor 8-foot table (limited availability) or 10 foot by 10 foot outdoor area, in which to provide your own set-up. No additional fees or commissions for sales will be charged. Deadline for entries is Sept. 12. For more information, call Celesta at 330-799-1652.

All proceeds from the entry fees will be donated to Austintown Township Park for improvements.

Curves collecting school supplies to help needy children

Curves of Austintown, located at 4330 New Road, will be collecting new book bags and school supplies for needy children in Austintown. School of Autism needs back-to-school supplies

The Potential Development Program’s School of Autism will be holding a back-to-school supply drive throughout the month of August. The items collected will be used in the kindergarten through eighth grade classes during the upcoming school year. Some of the items needed for the upcoming school year include crayons, colored pencils, #2 pencils, pens, paper, tissues, construction paper, scissors, 2 pocket folders, glue sticks and rulers. Donations can be dropped off at the School of Autism, 880 E. Indianola Ave. Youngstown, between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures for healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children.

During August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.
