Newborn abducted from Pittsburgh hospital

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Authorities have issued a statewide alert for a woman who took a 3-day old boy out of a Pittsburgh hospital this afternoon.

Police are searching the area around Magee Women’s Hospital in the Oakland neighborhood. Local media reports say a black woman dressed in scrubs and about 25-years old walked out of the hospital with the infant about 1 p.m.

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center spokeswoman Susan Manko says the abduction happened as the infant’s family was preparing to leave the hospital. She says the infant was taken by a woman who is not believed to be a UPMC employee.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richards says officers are investigating and a statewide alert has been issued, but she couldn’t confirm any more details.
