The Niles Health Department is offering a children’s immunization clinic from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at 34 W. State St.; and adult flu shots from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Niles Senior Citizen Center, 14 E. State St.

No appointment is necessary for the immunization clinic, but children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and the child’s immunization record is required.

The adult flu shots are by appointment only. Call 330-544-3676. Participants should bring their Medicaid or Medicare and/or their Anthem Senior Advantage ID cards. For all other HMOs, the cost is $20.

Elizabeth Smart to speak at dinner

GIRARD

Elizabeth Smart, a nationally known kidnapping survivor and child protection advocate, is keynote speaker for ValleyCare Health System of Ohio’s Healthy Woman event Sept. 19 at the Mahoning Country Club on Liberty Street in Girard.

Smart will present “Overcoming Adversity,” an inspirational message about life after her traumatic experience. In June 2002, Smart, 14, was abducted from her home in Salt Lake City, Utah, during the night. Her kidnapping was a national news story until she was freed nine months later.

The Healthy Woman event starts with a free health and vendor expo from 4 to 6 p.m. that is open to the public. Health information and health screenings such as blood pressure, cholesterol and bone-density testing will be available, along with numerous displays featuring a vast variety of products and services.

The dinner and presentation, a ticketed event, will begin immediately after the expo at 6 p.m. Tickets are $30 each. Reservations are required. Quit-smoking class

SHARON, PA.

Penn State Shenango is hosting a free, six-session smoking cessation class, facilitated by staff from the Behavioral Health Commission of Mercer County, Pa., beginning Sept. 10 from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 105, Penn Avenue, in downtown Sharon.

Doctor Robert Collins, reproductive endocrinologist with the Magee Center for Fertility and Reproductive Endocrinology North, will present “Alternatives in Family Building in the 21st Century: The Role of Donor Egg IVF” on Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Womancare Center of UPMC Horizon, 875 N Hermitage Road.

The presentation is by Simply Thick, manufacturers of a thickening agent for use with patients with dysphagia. One free continuing education unit is offered. Light refreshments will be served.
