Free mental illness class at two locations

WARREN/YOUNGSTOWN

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Mahoning Valley is offering two free educational classes for families and others dealing with loved ones living with mental illness. Class size is limited to the first 12 people who register for each location.

The Trumbull County class meets Sundays beginning Sept. 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Central Christian Church, 2051 E. Market St., Warren. To register and for information, call 866-671-3169.

The Mahoning County class meets Mondays beginning Oct. 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. at North Side Medical Center, 500 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown. To register and for information, call 330-540-8583.

$13,000 donation

STRUTHERS/YOUNGSTOWN

The Home Savings Charitable Foundation donated a total of $13,000 to three area organizations.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 480 Youngstown-Poland Road, received $5,000 to help finance the purchase and installation of an energy heating/cooling system; and Veterans’ Outreach, 524 Youngstown-Poland Road, will use its $5,000 for program support.

The Silver Lining Cancer Fund received $3,000 from the Home Savings Foundation to help meet the needs of adults and children with cancer undergoing active treatment for malignant diseases in the Mahoning Valley not covered by other forms of insurance of assistance.

Chronic-illness program

VILLA MARIA, PA.

Villa Maria Education & Spirituality Center is offering a relaxing program for caregivers for people with chronic illness or disabilities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 27. Participants can walk the labyrinth and nature trails, sketch and/or paint in the art house, and swim in an indoor pool. The cost is $5, which includes lunch. Registration is requested by Sept. 13. Obesity research walk

AKRON

The Akron Walk from Obesity is Sept. 22 at Firestone Park in the Tuscarawas Shelter. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., and the walk starts at 10 a.m.

Proceeds from the event, sponsored by Summa Health System and Akron General Medical Center, benefit the independent educational and research initiatives of the ASMBS Foundation and the Obesity Action Coalition. Walkers raise money by finding sponsors. Also, funds are raised through sponsorship, matching gifts, corporate contributions and other fundraising activities.

President installed

Dr. Jon C. Seager of Hartville was recently installed as the 2012-13 president-elect of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians during OAFP’s Annual Dinner at its Members Assembly. A member of the OAFP and the American Academy of Family Physicians since 1995, Dr. Seager practices family medicine at Hartville Family Physicians in Hartville and is an accountable care organization consultant for New Health Collaborative, as well as clinical assistant professor of family and community medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) in Rootstown.

He received his medical degree from The Ohio State University in 1999 and completed his residency at Barberton Citizens Hospital. He lives in North Canton.
