Second-inning mental blunders raze M.V.

Staff report

BATAVIA, NY

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers did not allow an earned run in Tuesday’s 4-1 loss to the Batavia Muckdogs, but a costly fielding error made the difference.

After recording a strike out to start the second inning, Luis Morel walked Jacob Wilson and allowed a single to Jonathan Keener. Reggie Williams then grounded into a potential double play but shortstop Dorssys Paulino, making his Scrappers debut, committed an error to allow all the runners to be safe and loaded the bases.

Steve Ramos brought in the first run after Morel tried to beat him to first base on a slow roller back to the mound. Breyvic Valera then delievered a three-run double. Those were the only runs the Muckdogs scored.

Mahoning Valley (27-33) didn’t record a hit until Paulino ripped a single to left field. He scored on Hunter Jones’ RBI ground out.

Paulino, just 17-years old, is the youngest player in the New York-Penn League.

Morel (2-4) went seven innings and struck out nine batters. Josh Martin took over and threw two perfect innings and struck out a pair.

Joe Cuda pitched seven innings to earn his sixth win for Batavia (33-28).
