1609: Galileo Galilei demonstrates his new telescope to a group of officials atop the Campanile in Venice.

1831: Nat Turner leads a violent slave rebellion in Virginia resulting in the deaths of at least 55 white people. (He is later executed.)

1912: The Boy Scouts of America names its first Eagle Scout, Arthur Rose Eldred of Troop 1 in Rockville Centre, N.Y.

1987: Sgt. Clayton Lonetree, the first Marine court-martialed for spying, is convicted in Quantico, Va., of passing secrets to the KGB. (Lonetree ends up serving eight years in a military prison.)

1987: Aladena “Jimmy the Weasel” Fratianno, one time Los Angeles mob boss who was a government witness for 10 years, is being dropped from the federal witness program. Among those Fratianno testified against was Ronald “Ronnie the Crab” Carabbia of Youngstown.

1972: The six Houser brothers and sisters, five of whom are in Holy Cross orders, are feted by St. Patrick Parish in Youngstown. Father Charles Houser traveled the farthest, from Bangladesh where he is a Holy Cross missionary, for their first full reunion in 26 years. The other siblings are George Houser of Youngstown, the Rev. Joseph Houser of Wauchula, Fla., Sister Rose Anita of Peoria, Ill., Sister Rita of Norfolk, Va., and Brother Anthony Houser of River Grove, Ill.

1962: Plans are revealed for a new hospital in Boardman that will be known as Doctor’s General Hospital and will have 65 beds.

A $1.2 million expansion and modernization program is announced for the Reactive Metals plant in Niles.

1937: Youngstown’s 1937-38 city directory lists the city’s population at 182,000, a gain of 12,000 from the 1930 U.S. census.

Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. directors increase the common stock dividend from 75 cents to $1 per share, but President Frank Purnell says there will still be funds for improvements at the No. 12 seamless pipe mill at Campbell.
