Pa. high court limits cuts to tax-collector pay

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A new Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling says school boards can’t cut the compensation of tax collectors to the point where it’s so low that they can no longer perform their duties.

The high court ruled unanimously today that two suburban Philadelphia districts went too far when they sharply reduced the rate by which their tax collectors are paid.

The court says it’s sympathetic to the challenges boards face during “periods of financial uncertainty,” but the changes were too substantial to have been made outside the state Legislature.

The decision is a victory for the tax collectors from the Pennridge and Central Bucks school districts.
