Boy, 14, hit by car, flown to Cleveland

A 14-year-old boy was transported by helicopter to a Cleveland hospital after being struck by a car Sunday afternoon.

The accident remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Warren Post. Neither the name of the boy nor that of the 21-year-old driver of the car was released Sunday evening.

The boy was struck on Church Hill Road, west of state Route 193. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center and then by helicopter to a Cleveland hospital.

Two face charges of stealing copper

Two men were in the Mahoning County jail on Sunday, after police found copper wire in their van.

Anthony Sabino, 58, of Hamilton Street, Warren, and Ronald Stickle, 46, of Mantua, each was charged with possessing criminal tools, breaking and entering and receiving stolen property.

A police officer on patrol saw the men loading rolled copper into a van parked on the side of Salt Springs Road about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. The officer saw an AT&T sticker on the wire. A ladder was found near the AT&T fenced in area and an AT&T employee took police to the area where the wire was believed to have been taken. The value is estimated at between $10,000 and $15,000.

Coats for Kids program planned

The Boardman Lions Club plans to help township residents experiencing financial difficulties whose children need new coats.

Applications for the Boardman Lions Coats for Kids Program are on the Lions website, www.boardmanlions.com, in the Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and in the Boardman Schools newsletters. The application deadline is Sept. 7. Applicants must be township residents. Qualified applicants will be notified by mail. The families will attend a night at Target to select their new coats.

Anyone who would like to donate to the program, the Lions website offers options. This year the club added honorariums and memorials. Boardman Lions is also on Facebook.

Grease fire at house

Two people were taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital on Sunday afternoon after a grease fire at a North Park Avenue home.

The names of the injured weren’t released, but firefighters said an elderly woman fell and a young man were burned. No damage estimate was available Sunday evening, and the fire department is investigating.
