Cortland police investigating possible child enticement

CORTLAND

Cortland Police Department is investigating a case of possible child enticement involving two girls, ages 11 and 12.

Officers received a call from the step-parent of one of the girls reporting that the girls had been at a business in the 100 block of South High Street Thursday afternoon.

While inside the business, the girls said they were approached by a man and woman who asked them to follow the couple to a ravine along Walnut Run Creek where they had something to show them, according to a news release by Cortland police.

The man and woman asked the girls their names, ages and if they were alone, then followed them from the store when the girls wouldn’t respond, according to police.

“Our agency is taking this extremely seriously and would request anyone that has information to contact the Cortland Police Department,” said police Chief Tom Andrews.

Police described the pair as a black woman, about 18 years old, wearing glasses, black Capri pants with a camouflage pattern, and a black and white tie-dyed shirt; and a white male, about 20 years old, wearing blue shorts and a gray T-shirt.

The girls told police the man and woman drove off on silver bicycles.

Officers checked the surrounding area but did not locate anyone matching the description, though police said witnesses saw the pair.

Anyone with information should contact Cortland police at 330-638-1000.
