St. Joseph turned their church into a stage full of actors during its Broadway Camp July 30- Aug. 3.

“It’s a week-long camp for kids 4-years-olds to incoming seventh graders. It’s singing, dancing and learning how to build a set and props. The whole camp premise is Broadway kids building confidence one performance at a time. We try to get them comfortable with being in front of people. They do costumes, they sing solos and they all have speaking lines. It’s kind of a crash course in performing arts,” said Nicole Fryfogie, camp volunteer.

Children practiced all week and performed 13 plays in front of their fellow church members, family and friends. Some participants were eager for the opportunity to show off what they’d learned all week. As children glided across the stage singing and dancing giving their best rendition of several musicals they not only became better performers, but also improved their confidence and self esteem . Former Ursline High School Theater student, Katie Prooh, was more than willing to help students learn the ins and outs of acting, and was excited to see their performances unfold.

“I’ve always been really active in theater at Ursline and it’s a real passion of mine, and I love working with the kids. I think for a few of them they realize that the audience is really enjoying them. I think it’s important for their confidence,” Prooh said.

Some children enjoyed the variety of activities, and were just happy to meet new people.

“I like it and I get to meet a lot of new friends,” said Cassie Sorber.
