The Boardman Shepherd of the Valley took a trip to the tropical islands during its summer concert with band, Calypso Gypsies Steel Drum Band July 24.

The event, which was open and free to the public, generated hundreds of people who gladly parked their lawn chairs and danced to light-hearted tunes.

“We do a summer concert series and it’s open to the community and it’s also open to the residents’ family members. It just gets residents and their family out together and gets the community on our campus,” said Shepherd of the Valley Associate Director Richard Limongi.

Band members played a variety of instruments that kept their audience members engaged. They played steel drums, tambourines and even invited the crowd to join in. At one point, there were several children shaking and rattling with the band while they played music.

“It’s really fun. It’s like we’re on the beach and it’s a perfect summer day for it. I think it’s really great for older people to get outside of their normal routine and it’s just really good for everybody,” said Jessica Patoray.
