A 7-year-old girl from Poland, Olivia Helmic, plans to make a difference for the homeless staying at Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley with her “Back Yard Carnival” on Aug. 26 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at her home, located at 8793 Woodland in Poland.

Helmick has a full day of activities planned for the public and friends with all proceeds going to benefit Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley’s “Summer Relief 100k in 100 Days” campaign to aid the Mission’s general fund.

The Mission has experienced an increase in the number of individuals needing overnight shelter in recent months amid a decrease in giving in 2012. This situation has left the Mission in a position that could lead up to a $100,000 deficit by fiscal year end on Sept. 30.

Helmick shared with her grandmother, Pam Coover that she wanted to do something to help the poor and they thought of the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley. Olivia then came to visit and tour the Mission with her family and is now excited to be hosting an event that will help people in need.

The Back Yard Carnival is open to the public and will include games, a Chinese auction, prizes, food, clowns and homemade jams for sale.
