Rotary Car Show to be on Aug. 22

The third annual Poland Rotary Car and Bike Show will be Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. at the Poland Methodist Church (rain date is Aug. 26 from 2-5 p.m.). There is a $5 registration fee per car, the proceeds of which go directly to charity. There will be food, fun and music for everyone, including fire trucks, concession trailers, and more. Prizes will be given for top car and bike. Music will be provided by DJ Chris from Rock Witcha productions.

Vendors needed for festival and craft show

Vendor/crafter space is still available for the Shepherd of the Valley–Poland Family Fall Festival and craft show. This year’s event will feature an array of outdoor activities for the whole family, including Friendship Hill horse carriage rides, bounce around, face painting, carnival games, music, concessions, bake sale, auctions, prizes and more.

The festival and craft show will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 Western Reserve Road). Interested crafters/vendors can call Shepherd of the Valley-Poland at 330-726-7110, extension 0. Funds raised at this event will support resident activities.

Disciples Christian Church to host outdoor concert

Disciples Christian Church is hosting a free outdoor Bluegrass and Gospel concert Aug. 24 from 6:30-8 p.m., featuring the group Dan Garrett and Limited Edition. The church is located at 565 Boardman-Canfield Road (Route 224 across from the Giant Eagle Get-Go) in Boardman. Those attending should bring a lawn chair or blanket. This event will take place inside the church if it rains. The concert is free, but refreshments will be available for a donation to the Mahoning County Habitat for Humanity. Knights of Columbus council 4471 expanding charitable efforts

In the Poland and Struthers area, Council 4471 is recognized for its support of agencies that serve special needs children and adults, service to the hungry and donations to community organizations. To make certain that this support and service continues, Council 4471 has established an endowment fund with the Catholic Foundation.

Using proceeds from the sale of real estate, Council 4471 has made a long-term investment in helping those in need. This fund will support the various charitable works of the council. Poland Rotary seeks golfers and sponsors for golf outing

The Poland Rotary will sponsor its annual community golf outing on Sept. 22 at Bedford Trails Golf Course, 713 Bedford Road, Lowellville. The four-person scramble has a 9 a.m. shotgun start and includes breakfast, lunch, 18 holes of golf with a cart, dinner, beverages and more.

The cost to play is $65 per person. The outing will offer door prizes, raffles, putting contest and a $10,000 hole-in-one prize, sponsored by Packer Thomas & Becker Funeral Homes. Hole sponsors for this event are $100 and can be purchased by contacting William Miner 330-503-0902. Reservations are due by Sept. 12. All proceeds from this event benefit local charities.

School of Autism needs back-to-school supplies

The Potential Development Program’s School of Autism will be holding a back-to-school supply drive throughout the month of August. The items collected will be used in the kindergarten through eighth grade classes during the upcoming school year. Some of the items needed for the upcoming school year include crayons, colored pencils, #2 pencils, pens, paper, tissues, construction paper, scissors, 2 pocket folders, glue sticks and rulers. Donations can be dropped off at the School of Autism, 880 E. Indianola Ave. Youngstown, between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Bonding with babies and books

The Poland library will host an event at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays through Aug. 29 for babies 6-23 months old that includes developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Make a sky craft or trim a tree

Make art on a string to swing from the sky above the librarian’s desk or decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree at the Poland library during regular library hours the month of August. This is for children of all ages.

Get your blood checked at the Poland library

A blood pressure screening by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross is to be held at the library on Aug. 28 from 1-4 p.m.

Library books for all eReader users

This informative hands-on event is designed to teach readers about a variety of eReaders, including the Kindle, the Nook and the iPad. See demonstrations, try out the eReaders and learn how to borrow eBooks from the library from 10 a.m. until noon on Aug. 25 at the Poland library. Registration is recommended, but not required. Bring your e-Reader to the Poland library at 6 p.m. on Monday and Monday and learn how to download eBooks from the library’s digital catalog on their website.

Local doctor offers free health lectures

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. Wearing your helmet could get you ice cream

The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children. During August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.
