The Poland High School band battled the heat and exhaustion Aug. 8 as it prepared for the upcoming marching season. “It takes every bit of practice. The sacrifice they give is tremendous and I have so much respect for these kids for doing it,” said Band Director Nick Olesko.

Countless band members, who have dedicated hundreds of hours learning new routines and songs maneuvered through their choreography while making sure not to miss a note. Some members of the drum line were more than willing to go through grueling hours of practice on the turf that, at times, is several degrees hotter than the temperature outside.

“I just like getting back with everyone and it’s just fun. It’s hard work, but we have fun at the same time,” said senior drummer Michael Pompeo.

As the band practiced, members were focused on two highlights of the coming season.

“I’m very excited and extremely excited about the Massillon band night and the Canfield game. It’s like our biggest event of the year,” said Majorette Dina Notarschi. Although the day marked the beginning of a new year full of possibilities, it also served as a bittersweet reminder to the seniors that this would be their final year in the band.

“I’m excited because it’s going to be an awesome year, but at the same time it’s sad. You’re so used to coming here but you can’t do that anymore. It’s scary and sad and I’m going to miss it, said Pompeo.
