Hearing set for ex-Struthers officer Lamping

A pretrial hearing is set for a former Struthers police officer who was fired after being charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Daniel Lamping, 34, who was with the city police department for seven years, is scheduled to appear in Mahoning County Court in Boardman at 11 a.m. Sept. 19.

Lamping was fired July 27. He has filed a grievance, which the city denied. The grievance will go to arbitration.

An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper stopped Lamping late July 16 on South Avenue in Boardman for driving without headlights, court documents say.

The trooper smelled alcohol when he went to the window of Lamping’s car, documents say.

Lamping refused field-sobriety tests and a breath test, and the city’s insurance carrier indicated that made him uninsurable, Mayor Terry Stocker said.

Lamping pleaded inno- cent at his arraignment July 19.

His driving privileges were suspended, but he appealed that suspension. His appeal was filed in court July 26.

He has driving privileges now because Judge Joseph Houser of the Boardman court granted a stay of the license suspension pending the outcome of the appeal, according to court personnel and documents.

The stay request was filed with the court Aug. 7.
