Canfield “Show of Bands” is Aug. 28

Canfield High School will host its 38th annual “Show of Bands” on Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the high school football stadium. In addition to selections from the Cardinal Marching Band, this event will also feature such local marching bands as Boardman, Poland, Struthers, Austintown and West Branch.

Canfield alumni graduates Magna Cum Laude

Lauren E. Fekete, 2008 graduate of Canfield High School, recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from Case Western Reserve University with a degree in Cognitive Science. She will be attending graduate school at Edinburgh University in Scotland, pursuing a master’s degree in Dance Science. She hopes to eventually begin working in fields or dance therapy and hopes to focus on aiding amputees and those with other limitations in finding strength and joy with mind awareness and body movement.

Canfield alumni is new NSCS member

Jonathon Como, of Canfield, has accepted membership to the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) and has been named to the Dean’s List at The University of Akron for the Spring 2012 semester. Como is a 2011 graduate of Canfield High School and is the son of Ron and Dana Gizzi of Canfield. He has maintained a GPA of 3.3.

Vendors needed for festival and craft show

Vendor/crafter space is still available for the Shepherd of the Valley–Poland Family Fall Festival and craft show. This year’s event will feature an array of outdoor activities for the whole family, including Friendship Hill horse carriage rides, bounce around, face painting, carnival games, music, concessions, bake sale, auctions, prizes and more.

The festival and craft show will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 Western Reserve Road). Interested crafters/vendors can call Shepherd of the Valley-Poland at 330-726-7110, extension 0. Funds raised at this event will support resident activities.

Disciples Christian Church to host outdoor concert

Disciples Christian Church is hosting a free outdoor Bluegrass and Gospel concert Aug. 24 from 6:30-8 p.m., featuring the group Dan Garrett and Limited Edition. The church is located at 565 Boardman-Canfield Road (Route 224 across from the Giant Eagle Get-Go) in Boardman. Those attending should bring a lawn chair or blanket. This event will take place inside the church if it rains. The concert is free, but refreshments will be available for a donation to the Mahoning County Habitat for Humanity. Area writers group to meet in Canfield

Area writers are invited to attend Monday Night Writers group on Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf , 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road, Canfield. This group is led by author and professional writer Nancy Christie and is a two-hour session that will include both writing exercises and discussions on the creative and business aspects of writing.

Those with ‘works-in-progress’ are welcome to bring copies of their projects for comments and critiques from the group. The fee is $10 per class and registration is preferred. For more information, email Nancy Christie at nancy@nancychristie.com.

School of Autism needs back-to-school supplies

The Potential Development Program’s School of Autism will be holding a back-to-school supply drive throughout the month of August. The items collected will be used in the kindergarten through eighth grade classes during the upcoming school year. Some of the items needed for the upcoming school year include crayons, colored pencils, #2 pencils, pens, paper, tissues, construction paper, scissors, 2 pocket folders, glue sticks and rulers. Donations can be dropped off at the School of Autism, 880 E. Indianola Ave. Youngstown, between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

New Life Church in Poland to feed hungry

New Life Church will its third annual Goodness Invasion, a food distribution from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown. The distribution is free, and open to residents of Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties in need of food assistance.

Co-Star contest at the Canfield library

Match up the co-stars from popular movies during regular library hours in August and you could walk away with a prize. This activity is for teens in grades 7-12.

Get your blood pressure checked

A blood pressure check will be offered at the Canfield library on Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. by the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association.

Rod and gun club hosts Conservation Day

Lowellville Rod and Gun Club is holding its first Conservation Day on Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. It includes fishing, archery, boating and shooting with medals and prizes awarded. There will also be wildlife exhibits, informational displays, special guests from area agencies, and free refreshments. Participants must provide their own fishing equipment, but bait will be provided. For information, call John at 330-757-9020.

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. East High School Class of 1964 reunion set

The Class of 1964 has organized a reunion for all classmates of the 1960’s of East High School on today from 3-7 p.m. The reunion will be held at St. George Croatian Center on Vestal Road in Youngstown. The cost is $20 per person and you must register in advance. The registration deadline ends August 6th.
