Ryan discusses Medicare cuts during visit to Warren

WARREN — While eating at the Hot Dog Shoppe today, Paul Ryan, the Republican vice-presidential candidate, defended his budget proposal that includes a $716 billion cut to Medicare, saying it’s included because President Barack Obama already “put those cuts in.”

Ryan added that Republicans “would never have done it in the first place,” if it weren’t for the Democratic president’s decision to make the cut.

The answer came in response to a question from Chris Moody of Yahoo!, invited by Ryan to join him for lunch.

Also at Ryan’s table were former Trumbull County Republican Chairman Craig Bonar, a Mitt Romney presidential delegate, and ex-state Rep. Randy Law, who is running for an Ohio House seat in the fall election.

Ryan, a seven-term congressman, invited Moody to eat and ask a question because today is the reporter’s birthday.

After a rally at Walsh University in North Canton, Ryan visited the Hot Dog Shoppe, a well-known restaurant in Warren.

The restaurant was somewhat chaotic as reporters, Secret Service agents and Republican handlers packed the place, causing some curious looks from regular customers.

Ryan worked the room, shaking hands and posing for pictures, and then sat down to eat some of the food he ordered. Ryan ate most of the two hot dogs with mustard, sauerkraut and onions, but barely touched the chili-cheese fries he ordered. Ryan chose what to eat after asking Tim McAdams, the restaurant’s manager, about the best food on the menu.
