Ex-prison guard gets life in Pa. gun-range killing

CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) — A former prison guard will spend the rest of his life in prison after pleading no-contest to second-degree murder in the killing of an attorney at a central Pennsylvania gun range.

Raymond Peake III, 66, was sentenced to life without parole after his plea today in Cumberland County Court.

Authorities say Peake shot and killed Enola attorney Todd Getgen in July 2010. Peake allegedly told police that he found Getgen dead and took the rifle so it could be used by an extremist group seeking the overthrow of the government.

Prosecutors had planned to seek the death penalty but the no-contest plea spares Getgen’s family a potentially lengthy trial that was scheduled for next month.

Peake was a guard at Camp Hill state prison at the time of Getgen’s killing.
