POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Liberty and Girard:

LIBERTY

Aug. 8

Theft: A Northgate Road woman reported the theft of an $800 computer.

Theft/criminal damaging: A $275 tennis racket was taken from a vehicle parked in the 5600 block of Lamplighter Road. The car’s center console was damaged.

Theft by deception: An accountant with Falcon Transportation, 4944 Belmont Ave., told police an Atlanta man and a Columbia, Tenn., man claimed they needed a special $2,800 check for truck repairs before the company learned the check had been divided into three smaller checks one of the men reportedly paid the other. The Georgia man is thought to have altered a number on his driver’s license to mislead the investigation, a report showed.

Assault/criminal damaging: Wanakee A. Scruggs, 22, of 4851 Winchester Drive, Austintown, and Shelika D. Wilder, 35, of 4003 Monticello Blvd., Liberty, faced charges of assault and criminal damaging after police on another call in the 3200 block of Belmont Avenue said they saw the two women fighting each other. In the melee, Scruggs and Wilder fell into and broke a window of a nearby business, a report said.

Theft: A Keefer Road woman discovered $300 worth of jewelry missing from her residence.

Criminal damaging: A front window was broken, likely with a brick, at USA Gas Mart, 2904 Belmont Ave.

Arrest: Officers responding to an unwanted person in the 3900 block of Belmont Avenue took into custody 51-year-old Kenneth L. Birli of Manahawkin, N.J., on a charge of failure to appear in court.

Aug. 9

Theft: A woman attending a social function in the 1600 block of Tibbetts-Wick Road reported her purse missing.

Theft: An employee with a Belmont Avenue business accused his mother of picking up his paycheck, giving him $25 and keeping the rest without authorization.

Drugs: A traffic stop on Belmont Avenue resulted in 29-year-old Adam R. Mirkin’s arrest on a drug-abuse charge. Mirkin, of 1040 Colonial Drive, Liberty, had green flakes in his vehicle thought to be suspected marijuana, police said.

Menacing/criminal damaging: A Tuttle Lane man said an acquaintance struck his bicycle with a wooden stick. The other man said he had been threatened.

Theft: A $6,000 horse trailer was stolen in the 5400 block of Lakeview Drive.

Aug. 10

Menacing: A Colonial Drive woman said her former boyfriend made a threatening call to her.

Aug. 11

Theft: Police charged Joseph Batovsky, 59, of 850 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, with stealing about $46 worth of food from Jimmy’s Italian Specialties Inc., 3230 Belmont Ave.

Domestic violence: Joseph F. Monroe, 37, of 212 E. Montrose St., Liberty, faced misdemeanor charges of domestic violence, resisting arrest and criminal mischief after Monroe’s mother alleged he had struck her face during an argument related to his girlfriend. Monroe also led police on a brief foot chase and tried to punch an officer, a report said.

Arrest: After reportedly seeing a driver back into a car and drive away, police on state Route 193 charged 26-year-old Daniel J. Holko of Pittsburgh with operating a vehicle impaired and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

Domestic violence: Glenn Mosley, 50, was arrested at his residence, 3031 North Gate Road, Liberty, and charged with the crime after his girlfriend alleged an intoxicated Mosley had struck the back of her head during an argument.

Aug. 12

Burglary: To a garage in the 900 block of Goist Lane, from which a $2,000 motorcycle was stolen.

Aug. 13

Recovered property: Police found and removed a $5,000 wood-chipping machine from next to a guardrail on Logan Way.

Breaking and entering: Someone cut a door lock and hasp before entering Blake’s Mini Storage Inc., 5355 Belmont Ave., though it was unknown if anything was taken.

Theft/menacing: A man at Church Hill Park off Belmont Avenue told officers two men grabbed his baseball cap and tried to goad the accuser into a fight.

Harassment: An elderly Mount Everett Drive woman reported her son’s former girlfriend made seven unwanted calls to her.

Criminal damaging: Someone in the 5200 block of Sampson Drive threw eggs, damaging a window to a home as well as a portion of the porch and siding.

GIRARD

Aug. 11

Domestic violence: Brian A. Guy, no age listed, of 126 W. Second St., Girard, and a 14-year-old boy were charged with domestic violence and resisting arrest after a fight between the two. The teen also was charged with underage consumption of alcohol.

Domestic violence: Richard L. Allen Jr., 40, of 727 E. Kline St., Girard, faced two counts each of domestic violence and aggravated menacing after his wife alleged Allen had struck her chest and threw her into a table during an argument. He also was accused of threatening another family member and retrieving a gun from his vehicle in a threatening manner, though police said the firearm was unloaded.

Aug. 12

Harassment: A South Elruth Court man reported receiving numerous unwanted calls and text messages over a two- to three-month period.

Theft: An East Wilson Avenue man reported medications, checks, clothing and a backpack missing from his car.

Possible burglary: Police on patrol in the 100 block of Morris Avenue noticed an open garage door that looked suspicious. The homeowner said he had closed the door and officers saw footprints nearby.

Assault: A man alleged a woman pushed him out of a truck while stopped at West Wilson Avenue and South Market Street. The accuser was uninjured, however.

Misuse of a credit card: A North Avenue woman accused a family member of using her credit/debit card for services without the cardholder’s knowledge.

Trespassing: Someone entered a vehicle in the 300 block of East Wilson Avenue before being spotted and fleeing.

Aug. 13

Trespassing: Someone ransacked a car parked in the 400 block of Mosier Road, though nothing appeared to have been stolen.

Possible criminal damaging: A driver near Indiana Avenue reported having heard a loud noise, as if an object struck her vehicle.

Recovered property: A $400 dirt bike was found after having been removed from a garage in the 30 block of Morris Avenue.
