A grievance filed by a fired Struthers police officer will go to arbitration.

Struthers Mayor Terry Stocker said he denied the grievance filed by Dan Lamping, 34, who had been with the city police department for seven years.

Lamping was fired July 27.

An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper had pulled him over late July 16 on South Avenue in Boardman because he was driving without lights, documents in Mahoning County Court in Boardman indicate.

The trooper reported he could smell alcohol when he went to the window of Lamping’s car.

Lamping refused field- sobriety tests, was arrested and refused a breath test at the highway patrol post, according to court documents.

Because of that, Stocker said, the city’s insurance carrier determined that Lamping was uninsurable.

Lamping’s driver’s license was suspended, and Stocker said there was no place for him on the police force without it.

Stocker said Friday that the city was sent a letter from Lamping’s union representative indicating that because the grievance was denied, the union is going to ask for an arbitrator.
