Rams 38, Colts 3: Andrew Luck’s first NFL throw was a 63-yard touchdown pass, and the rookie led Indianapolis to three first-half touchdown drives and a victory over St. Louis in Sunday’s preseason opener. For Colts fans, it was like a jolt from the past. Fourteen years earlier, Peyton Manning’s first NFL throw was a 48-yard TD pass to Marvin Harrison. This time, Luck, under pressure, dumped off a short screen pass to Donald Brown, who darted up the field, then cut across and outran the Rams’ defense for the score. Luck finished 10 of 16 for 188 yards with two TDs in 24 plays for Indy (No. 32 in the AP Pro32). Sam Bradford, the No. 1 pick in 2010, was 7 of 9 for 57 yards in two series for the Rams (No. 28)
Seahawks 27, Titans 17: Tennessee quarterback Matt Hasselbeck had a rocky return to the Pacific Northwest, throwing a pair of interceptions in his limited appearance, while Seattle rookie Russell Wilson dazzled with touchdowns running and throwing in the second half to help the Seahawks. Hasselbeck, who was Seattle’s anchor at quarterback for nearly a decade, saw the first play of the game — a pass intended for Nate Washington — get deflected into the arms of Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner and returned 23 yards for a touchdown. Seattle (No. 22 APPro32) went ahead 17-3 on the first drive of the second half when Wilson, in a three-way competition for the Seahawks’ QB job, threw a 39-yard scoring pass to Braylon Edwards. Wilson added a 32-yard bootleg touchdown run with 1:51 left to cap an impressive debut. Matt Flynn got the start at quarterback for Seattle while incumbent Tarvaris Jackson was left to watch this week. Coach Pete Carroll has given no indication how the rotation will be next week when Seattle travels to Denver.
Dolphins: A person familiar with the decision says six-time Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson has been released by the Miami Dolphins one day after he was arrested in a domestic battery case involving his wife. The person confirmed the decision to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins hadn’t announced the move. Johnson was released on $2,500 bond earlier Sunday after his wife accused him of head-butting her during an argument in front of their home. Johnson was charged with simple domestic battery, a misdemeanor. The confrontation came barely a month after Johnson married Evelyn Lozada, who is on the reality TV show “Basketball Wives.” The 34-year-old Johnson had been battling for a spot on the Dolphins.
Patriots: Veteran receiver Plaxico Burress is in New England for a workout with the Patriots. A person with knowledge of the tryout tells The Associated Press that Burress had been invited to Foxborough, Mass., to work out for the AFC champions. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the tryout has not been publicly announced. Burress spent last season with the Jets after finishing a 20-month prison sentence on a gun charge. New York did not re-sign Burress, who turned 35 on Sunday. He had 45 catches, eight for touchdowns, and 612 yards for the Jets last year. A first-round draft pick by Pittsburgh in 2000, Burress also played with the Giants, catching the winning TD pass in the 2008 Super Bowl against the Patriots.
