New DNA match leads to charges in in 1998 Ohio rape case

CINCINNATI (AP) — Authorities say an Ohio inmate has been charged in a 1998 rape case after his DNA sample taken recently matched DNA from the older investigation.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters says 53-year-old Alfonso Williams was indicted today on two counts of rape and single counts of aggravated burglary and kidnapping.

The prosecutor says Williams’ DNA was taken when he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault last year in Cincinnati.

Williams is serving 14 years in the London Correctional Institution.

He is charged with twice raping a 77-year-old Cincinnati woman in her home on May 3, 1998, and stealing $385 from her. She died of natural causes in 1999.

The attorney who represented Williams last year did not immediately return calls seeking comment today.
