Grant will help to train pipe welders

To meet the demand for pipe welders, a local union has received $65,265 to train workers.

Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 396 leadership announced today the union had received the grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission to train pipe welder for the burgeoning oil and gas industry re. The grant includes a 50 percent local match, which means a total of 130,530 will be spent to train welders.

This grant is a beginning. It is a start to a lot bigger and better opportunities in the Utica and Marcellus Shale, said Butch Taylor, business manager for the union.

The union intends to training 60 new welders in the next year for Marcellus and Utica shale operations, according to the grant proposal.
