Mining company fire

PETERSBURG

Fire of undetermined origin damaged a sorting tower Saturday night at the Subtropolis Mining Co. about a mile west of Petersburg at 5455 E. Garfield Road. Several area fire departments were still at the scene at 10:30 p.m., said Springfield Chief Matt Gebhardt. The fire was reported at about 8:50 p.m. The cause is under investigation and the damage estimate was unknown, Gebhardt said. The mine was shut down at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

Salem water break

SALEM

A waterline break in the area of Southeast Boulevard between South Lincoln and Franklin avenues left a large portion of the city without water Saturday afternoon and evening. The break was reported at about 2 p.m. and crews were still working to repair it at 9 p.m. Police indicated some 150 calls were received from people reporting loss of water pressure.

Traficant signs book

BOARDMAN

Ex-U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. will sign his book, “America’s Last Minute Man,” from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Barnes & Noble at Shops at Boardman Park. The 1,200-page book includes his art work, some of his speeches on the U.S. House floor and his political career. It sells for $34.95.

Farm bureau meeting

The Trumbull County Farm Bureau will have its annual meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at Vernon’s Cafe, 720 Youngstown Road. It will highlight activities of the past year and prepare for next year’s programs. Active members will vote on proposed policies and elect board members and delegates to the Ohio Farm Bureau annual meeting.
