Fire damages Petersburg mining company Saturday

PETERSBURG

Fire of undetermined origin damaged a sorting tower Saturday night at the Subtropolis Mining Co. about a mile west of Petersburg at 5455 E. Garfield Road.

Several area fire departments were still at the scene at 10:30 p.m., said Springfield Chief Matt Gebhardt.

The fire was reported at about 8:50 p.m.

The cause is under investigation and the damage estimate was unknown, Gebhardt said.

The mine was shut down at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
