Storm hits Mercer; no injuries reported
mERCER, PA.
Mercer County was hit hard by Thursday evening’s storm, according to the Mercer County 911 center and Pennsylvania State Police.
Wind blew down trees and wires.
In Mercer, a tree fell on a house and a car, state police said. Trees also were down on state Route 318 near the borough.
No injuries were reported.
Branch library closing to fix air conditioning
BOARDMAN
The Boardman public library branch, 7680 Glenwood Ave., will be closed for one week beginning at 5:30 p.m. Saturday for replacement of an air-conditioning unit.
The branch will reopen at 9 a.m. Aug. 20. Book and media drops outside the branch will be available while it is closed, but overdue fines for items borrowed from the Boardman branch will not accrue during this time.
The $53,000 replacement is being performed by Diversified Comfort Services Inc. of New Middletown.
Jazz fest closures
YOUNGSTOWN
Today through Sunday, three downtown streets will be closed for the Youngstown Jazz Festival: Federal Street from Phelps Street to Champion Street; Wick Avenue from Commerce to Federal; and Market Street from Boardman Street to Federal.
Police arrest man in stabbing of brother
YOUNGSTOWN
A man is charged with felonious assault in the stabbing of his brother.
Youngstown police arrested Hence Cheris, 54, at an Ellenwood Avenue address at 10:08 p.m. Wednesday.
When officers got to the home, they found Hence Cheris sitting on the porch and his brother, Tony Cheris, lying on the sidewalk nearby. He was covered in blood and unresponsive.
Police said a neighbor reported that Tony Cheris knocked on his door and said his brother stabbed him.
Then he left the porch and collapsed.
Officers followed a blood trail to the kitchen, where they found a box cutter, a police report says.
Hence Cheris was taken to the Mahoning County Jail.
Tony Cheris was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center.
The hospital had no information on his condition.
