Daycare hosts open house today

Sunshine and Lollipops Daycare and Learning Center will host an Open House today from 1-4 p.m. The preschool is located at 110 Poland Avenue, inside the Struthers Presbyterian Church.

The center will provide information on its daycare and preschool and after-school programs. For more information, call 330-755-1556.

Caprice Angels presents: the Cruisin’ Caprice car show

The Cruisin’ Caprice car show will be held at the Caprice Health Care Center, 9184 Market St., North Lima, Ohio on Aug. 18, weather permitting (rain date August 19), from 12-4 p.m. Registration is free and all makes, models and years are welcome. Prizes will be awarded for resident choice, employee choice and people’s choice. DJ Lee will provide music from 12-3 p.m. There will be food for sale, a chines auction, 50/50 raffle and a bake sale. Sold by moms for moms

Boardman Park will be having its annual Baby Bargain Boutique on Sept. 22 at the Masters Pavilion from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Admission is free. You may bring a can good or non-perishable food item to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank. For those who have items to sell, reservations for table rentals will be taken on August 22. Table reservations can only be made at the Park Office from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Monday-Friday. Payments can be made by cash or check only. There are indoor and outdoor spots available. The cost for Boardman residents is $20 for an inside table or $15 for an outside spot. For non-residents the cost is $25 for an inside table or $20 for an outside spot. Outside spots must bring their own table and may use a pop-up tent. You may only reserve two tables; no commercial vendors or phone reservations. Poland alumni finishes in top 15 percent class

Francesca Kosec, a 2007 graduate of Poland High School and a 2011 graduate of Duquesne University, has just finished her first year at Duquesne Law School. She finished her first year ranked in the top 15 percent of her class and was invited to be a part of the Duquesne Law Review as a staff editor.

Knights of Columbus council 4471 expanding charitable efforts

In the Poland and Struthers area, Council 4471 is recognized for its support of agencies that serve special needs children and adults, service to the hungry and donations to community organizations. To make certain that this support and service continues, Council 4471 has established an endowment fund with the Catholic Foundation. Using proceeds from the sale of real estate, Council 4471 has made a long-term investment in helping those in need. This fund will support the various charitable works of the council. Poland Rotary seeks golfers and sponsors for golf outing

The Poland Rotary will sponsor its annual community golf outing on Sept. 22 at Bedford Trails Golf Course, 713 Bedford Road, Lowellville. The four-person scramble has a 9 a.m. shotgun start and includes breakfast, lunch, 18 holes of golf with a cart, dinner, beverages and more.

The cost to play is $65 per person. The outing will offer door prizes, raffles, putting contest and a $10,000 hole-in-one prize, sponsored by Packer Thomas & Becker Funeral Homes. Hole sponsors for this event are $100 and can be purchased by contacting William Miner 330-503-0902. Reservations are due by Sept. 12. All proceeds from this event benefit local charities.

Family resource fair to help families connect with local agencies

The Precious Ones Family Resource Center is sponsoring their second annual family resource fair today at the Greater Mill Creek Community Center located at 496 Glenwood Ave, Youngstown, Ohio. The event will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the gymnasium. Organizations will share details of how they can help local families. There will also be a variety of activities for children and parents. Prizes and food will be available for event participation. There will be free school supplies for every child who attends. School of Autism needs back-to-school supplies

The Potential Development Program’s School of Autism will be holding a back-to-school supply drive throughout the month of August. The items collected will be used in the kindergarten through eighth grade classes during the upcoming school year. Some of the items needed for the upcoming school year include crayons, colored pencils, #2 pencils, pens, paper, tissues, construction paper, scissors, 2 pocket folders, glue sticks and rulers. Donations can be dropped off at the School of Autism, 880 E. Indianola Ave. Youngstown, between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. A Potential Development representative will also be present at the Southern Park Mall Community Day on August 10 if you would like to drop donations off there.

Bring one, take one plant exchange

The Ohio State University Extension Master Gardeners of Mahoning County will host “Bring One, Take One,” a perennial flower and seed exchange today at 9 a.m. at the Canfield Fairgrounds next to the pumpkin building. Any person who wishes to participate in the exchange should bring plants, seeds or bulbs to share in the exchange. Your items should be labeled so the new owner will know the name, planting instructions, color, and bloom seasons, etc. Invasive species will not be accepted. In addition to the plant exchange, there will be an exchange of shovels, gardening tools, aprons, ceramic pots, garden art, unopened soil, fertilizer and garden decorations. These items must be in good condition, clean and usable.

Women’s business association awards scholarships

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will welcome scholarship recipients and their parents to its Tuesday meeting at 6:30 p.m. in Canfield at A La Cart Catering.

In addition to presenting the students with their scholarship checks, the chapter will install its new officers for the 2012-2013 year. They are Shirley Pappagallo (president), Joan Lucansky (vice president), Marilyn Abramski (secretary) and Joyce Billock (treasurer).

Dinner will be croissant sandwiches of three varieties, pasta, fruit and tossed salads, strawberry shortcake and beverages for $14.50. Reservations will be due no later than Aug. 5 by calling Jackie Fischio at 330-788-6634.

Go camping and party at library

The Poland library will be sharing campfire stories, songs, games, and s’more fun at its summer reading finale Tuesday at 2 p.m. Treats will be provided. This is an experience for children of all ages.

Bonding with babies and books

The Poland library will host an event at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays through Aug. 29 for babies 6-23 months old that includes developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Make a sky craft or trim a tree

Make art on a string to swing from the sky above the librarian’s desk or decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree at the Poland library during regular library hours the month of August. This is for children of all ages.

Get your blood checked at the Poland library

A blood pressure screening by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross is to be held at the library on Aug. 28 from 1-4 p.m.

Library books for all eReader users

This informative hands-on event is designed to teach readers about a variety of eReaders, including the Kindle, the Nook and the iPad. See demonstrations, try out the eReaders and learn how to borrow eBooks from the library from 10 a.m. until noon on Aug. 25 at the Poland library. Registration is recommended, but not required. Rod and gun club hosts Conservation Day

Lowellville Rod and Gun Club is holding its first Conservation Day on Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. It includes fishing, archery, boating and shooting with medals and prizes awarded. There will also be wildlife exhibits, informational displays, special guests from area agencies, and free refreshments. Participants must provide their own fishing equipment, but bait will be provided. For information, call John at 330-757-9020.

Bring your e-Reader to the Poland library at 6 p.m. on Monday and Aug. 20 and learn how to download eBooks from the library’s digital catalog on their website.

Summer skating lessons ending

Today is the last day to get summer skating lessons at The Ice Zone, 360 McClurg Road, in Boardman will offer ice skating lessons. Participants can choose from three classes: basic skills skating classes for all ages, Mommy and Me skating (Adult and toddler to Kindergarten aged child), and a special needs skating class.

The cost is $90 per student and includes six skating lessons, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and a $25 registration fee that includes one year of basic skills membership to the U.S. Figure Skating Association, a personal record book to track progress, accident and injury insurance, and a one-year subscription to the U.S. figure skating “Basic Skills Skating Magazine.” The total cost is $115 for regular programs or $140 for Mommy and Me.

Local doctor offers free health lectures

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. Wearing your helmet could get you ice cream

The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children. During August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.
