Area writers group to meet in Canfield

Area writers are invited to attend Monday Night Writers group on Aug. 20 from 6-8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf , 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road, Canfield. This group is led by author and professional writer Nancy Christie and is a two-hour session that will include both writing exercises and discussions on the creative and business aspects of writing.

Those with ‘works-in-progress’ are welcome to bring copies of their projects for comments and critiques from the group. The fee is $10 per class and registration is preferred. For more information, email Nancy Christie at nancy@nancychristie.com.

Caprice Angels presents: the Cruisin’ Caprice car show

The Cruisin’ Caprice car show will be held at the Caprice Health Care Center, 9184 Market St., North Lima, Ohio on Aug. 18, weather permitting (rain date August 19), from 12-4 p.m. Registration is free and all makes, models and years are welcome. Prizes will be awarded for resident choice, employee choice and people’s choice. DJ Lee will provide music from 12-3 p.m. There will be food for sale, a chines auction, 50/50 raffle and a bake sale. New Life Church in Poland to feed hungry

New Life Church will its third annual Goodness Invasion, a food distribution from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 18. at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown. The distribution is free, and open to residents of Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties in need of food assistance.

Sold by moms for moms

Boardman Park will be having its annual Baby Bargain Boutique on Sept. 22 at the Masters Pavilion from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Admission is free. You may bring a can good or non-perishable food item to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank. For those who have items to sell, reservations for table rentals will be taken on August 22. Table reservations can only be made at the Park Office from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Monday-Friday. Payments can be made by cash or check only. There are indoor and outdoor spots available. The cost for Boardman residents is $20 for an inside table or $15 for an outside spot. For non-residents the cost is $25 for an inside table or $20 for an outside spot. Outside spots must bring their own table and may use a pop-up tent. You may only reserve two tables; no commercial vendors or phone reservations. Co-Star contest at the Canfield library

Match up the co-stars from popular movies during regular library hours in August and you could walk away with a prize. This activity is for teens in grades 7-12.

A blood pressure check will be offered at the Canfield library on Aug. 21 from 1-3 p.m. by the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association.

Family resource fair to help families connect with local agencies

The Precious Ones Family Resource Center is sponsoring their second annual family resource fair today at the Greater Mill Creek Community Center located at 496 Glenwood Ave, Youngstown, Ohio. The event will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the gymnasium. Organizations will share details of how they can help local families. There will also be a variety of activities for children and parents. Prizes and food will be available for event participation.

School of Autism needs back-to-school supplies

The Potential Development Program’s School of Autism will be holding a back-to-school supply drive throughout the month of August. The items collected will be used in the kindergarten through eighth grade classes during the upcoming school year.

Some of the items needed for the upcoming school year include crayons, colored pencils, #2 pencils, pens, paper, tissues, construction paper, scissors, 2 pocket folders, glue sticks and rulers.

Donations can be dropped off at the School of Autism, 880 E. Indianola Ave. Youngstown, between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. A Potential Development representative will also be present at the Southern Park Mall Community Day on August 10 if you would like to drop donations off there.

Bring one, take one plant exchange

The Ohio State University Extension Master Gardeners of Mahoning County will host “Bring One, Take One,” a perennial flower and seed exchange today at 9 a.m. at the Canfield Fairgrounds next to the pumpkin building. Any person who wishes to participate in the exchange should bring plants, seeds or bulbs to share in the exchange. Your items should be labeled so the new owner will know the name, planting instructions, color, and bloom seasons, etc. Invasive species will not be accepted. In addition to the plant exchange, there will be an exchange of shovels, gardening tools, aprons, ceramic pots, garden art, unopened soil, fertilizer and garden decorations. These items must be in good condition, clean and usable.

Women’s business association awards scholarships

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will welcome scholarship recipients and their parents to its meeting on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Canfield at A La Cart Catering.

In addition to presenting the students with their scholarship checks, the chapter will install its new officers for the 2012-2013 year. They are Shirley Pappagallo (president), Joan Lucansky (vice president), Marilyn Abramski (secretary) and Joyce Billock (treasurer).

Dinner will be croissant sandwiches of three varieties, pasta, fruit and tossed salads, strawberry shortcake and beverages for $14.50. Reservations will be due no later than Sunday by calling Jackie Fischio at 330-788-6634.

Rod and gun club hosts Conservation Day

Lowellville Rod and Gun Club is holding its first Conservation Day on Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. It includes fishing, archery, boating and shooting with medals and prizes awarded. There will also be wildlife exhibits, informational displays, special guests from area agencies, and free refreshments. Summer skating coming to an end

Today is the last day to take summer skating lessons at The Ice Zone, 360 McClurg Road, in Boardman will offer ice skating lessons. Participants can choose from three classes: basic skills skating classes for all ages, Mommy and Me skating (Adult and toddler to Kindergarten aged child), and a special needs skating class. The cost is $90 per student and includes six skating lessons, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and a $25 registration fee that includes one year of basic skills membership to the U.S. Figure Skating Association, a personal record book to track progress, accident and injury insurance, and a one-year subscription to the U.S. figure skating “Basic Skills Skating Magazine.” The total cost is $115 for regular programs or $140 for Mommy and Me.

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. East High School Class of 1964 reunion set

The Class of 1964 has organized a reunion for all classmates of the 1960’s of East High School on August 18 from 3-7 p.m. The reunion will be held at St. George Croatian Center on Vestal Road in Youngstown. The cost is $20 per person and you must register in advance. The registration deadline ends August 6th.
