Daycare hosts back to school event

Hopes and Dreams Preschool and Day Care will host a free back to school Health and Fun Fair Aug. 17 from 4 to 6 p.m.

There will be eye screenings by Good Will, dental screenings by Small Smiles, Akron Children’s injury prevention, fire and poison prevention, kids identification kits, Internet safety by Safe Surfing Foundation, the Austintown Fire Department, D.A.R.E, face painting, balloon art, craft table, a Disney sing-a-long and Antone’s will be supplying hot dogs.

The center is located 33 N. Wickliffe Circle in Austintown and we are located directly behind the fire department.

Highway Tabernacle hosts back-to-school event

The ‘Back to School Blow Out’ is a free giveaway of clothes, shoes and more for infants, children and adults that will take place on Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Family Life Center located at 3000 S. Raccoon Road, Austintown.

This event is open to the public and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

There are no income or residency restrictions. Child care for preschoolers and toddlers will be provided so adults can shop.

Bags and a free lunch will also be provided.

Fitch Class of 1977 to host 35th reunion

The Austintown Fitch Class of 1977 will host its 35th class reunion on Labor Day weekend. A mixer will occur on Aug. 31 at the Upstairs Lounge at 7 p.m and the reunion dinner will take place Sept. 1 at the Regency House at 6:30 p.m.

Fitch Band Night to be Aug. 27

Three Austintown Fitch Band Night is Aug. 27 at the Fitch High School football field. Show your support for your local high school band and musicians at this event while seeing shows from other schools around the area as well. The music starts at 7 p.m.

Caprice Angels presents: the Cruisin’ Caprice car show

The Cruisin’ Caprice car show will be held at the Caprice Health Care Center, 9184 Market St., North Lima, Ohio on Aug. 18, weather permitting (rain date August 19), from 12-4 p.m. Registration is free and all makes, models and years are welcome. Prizes will be awarded for resident choice, employee choice and people’s choice. DJ Lee will provide music from 12-3 p.m. There will be food for sale, a chines auction, 50/50 raffle and a bake sale. Sold by moms for moms

Boardman Park will be having its annual Baby Bargain Boutique on Sept. 22 at the Masters Pavilion from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Admission is free. You may bring a can good or non-perishable food item to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank. For those who have items to sell, reservations for table rentals will be taken on August 22. Table reservations can only be made at the Park Office from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Monday-Friday. Payments can be made by cash or check only. There are indoor and outdoor spots available. The cost for Boardman residents is $20 for an inside table or $15 for an outside spot. For non-residents the cost is $25 for an inside table or $20 for an outside spot. Outside spots must bring their own table and may use a pop-up tent. You may only reserve two tables; no commercial vendors or phone reservations. Arts and crafts show set for September

An arts and crafts show will be held Sept. 16 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (set-up is from 8-10:30 a.m.) at Austintonwn Township Park on Kirk Road. Entries are accepted for crafts, photography, pencil/ink drawings and paintings in oils, watercolor or acrylics. All works must be made by the artist or craftsman; no kits will be accepted.

The entry fee is $20 for an indoor 8-foot table (limited availability) or 10 foot by 10 foot outdoor area, in which to provide your own set-up. No additional fees or commissions for sales will be charged. Deadline for entries is Sept. 12. For more information, call Celesta at 330-799-1652.

All proceeds from the entry fees will be donated to Austintown Township Park for improvements.

Curves collecting school supplies to help needy children

Curves of Austintown, located at 4330 New Road, will be collecting new book bags and school supplies for needy children in Austintown. Anyone wanting to drop off donations can do so during regular business hours in August. Anyone interested in a membership will receive a discount with their donation. Call 330-793-9802 for details.

Family resource fair to help families connect with local agencies

The Precious Ones Family Resource Center is sponsoring their second annual family resource fair on today at the Greater Mill Creek Community Center located at 496 Glenwood Ave, Youngstown, Ohio. The event will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the gymnasium. Organizations will share details of how they can help local families. There will also be a variety of activities for children and parents. Prizes and food will be available for event participation. There will be free school supplies for every child who attends. School of Autism needs back-to-school supplies

The Potential Development Program’s School of Autism will be holding a back-to-school supply drive throughout the month of August. The items collected will be used in the kindergarten through eighth grade classes during the upcoming school year. Some of the items needed for the upcoming school year include crayons, colored pencils, #2 pencils, pens, paper, tissues, construction paper, scissors, 2 pocket folders, glue sticks and rulers. Donations can be dropped off at the School of Autism, 880 E. Indianola Ave. Youngstown, between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. A Potential Development representative will also be present at the Southern Park Mall Community Day on August 10 if you would like to drop donations off there.

Bring one, take one plant exchange

The Ohio State University Extension Master Gardeners of Mahoning County will host “Bring One, Take One,” a perennial flower and seed exchange on today at 9 a.m. at the Canfield Fairgrounds next to the pumpkin building. Any person who wishes to participate in the exchange should bring plants, seeds or bulbs to share in the exchange. Your items should be labeled so the new owner will know the name, planting instructions, color, and bloom seasons, etc. Invasive species will not be accepted. In addition to the plant exchange, there will be an exchange of shovels, gardening tools, aprons, ceramic pots, garden art, unopened soil, fertilizer and garden decorations. These items must be in good condition, clean and usable.

Summer skating coming to an end

Today is the last day to get summer skating lessons at The Ice Zone, 360 McClurg Road, in Boardman will offer ice skating lessons. Participants can choose from three classes: basic skills skating classes for all ages, Mommy and Me skating (Adult and toddler to Kindergarten aged child), and a special needs skating class.

The cost is $90 per student and includes six skating lessons, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and a $25 registration fee that includes one year of basic skills membership to the U.S. Figure Skating Association, a personal record book to track progress, accident and injury insurance, and a one-year subscription to the U.S. figure skating “Basic Skills Skating Magazine.” The total cost is $115 for regular programs or $140 for Mommy and Me.

Local doctor offers free health lectures

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures for healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children.

During August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.
