NEW SPRINGFIELD

Springfield Township trustees have hired Howland Co. of Youngstown to represent the township in its effort to get an $853,000 Issue Two grant to improve Felger Road. The company will be paid a pre-determined fee set by the grant. The amount was not available at Wednesday’s trustees meeting.

The proposed project would widen the road to 20 feet; it now varies from 10 to 16 feet and narrows to one lane in parts. The project would also include paving and drainage work. It would start at Calla Road and end at Donaldson Road.

If the township is approved for the grant, it would have to contribute 31 percent or $264,000 of the project cost. But Trustee Robert Orr said the township’s contribution may not be cash but could instead come from work the road department is doing on the other end of Felger, as well as donated stone.

The project must be submitted in early September and will compete with projects from other local governments in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Trustees also hired Ryan Stacey of Petersburg as a part-time road worker at $12.50 hourly.

After the meeting, Orr said that following a recent meeting with trustees, Mahoning County Engineer Richard Marsico and Chief Deputy County Engineer Marilyn Kenner have agreed to study the intersections of Unity Road with Calla, Middletown and South Range roads. The safety of the intersections will be studied in relation to traffic problems, including fatal traffic accidents at Calla and at Middletown Roads.
