Lightning surge causes mattress fire

AUSTINTOWN

Firefighters responded to an electrical fire shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday at 3901 Claridge Drive after the home was struck by lightning.

Lt. Bob Williams said lightning caused a surge in electricity throughout the home. The surge caused a mattress, which was next to an electrical outlet, to catch fire in an upstairs room. Williams said the fire was confined to one room and no one was injured.
