Elizabeth Smart to speak at forum on health in Girard
Staff report
GIRARD
Elizabeth Smart, a nationally known kidnapping survivor and prominent child-protection advocate, speaks next month at the Healthy Woman Expo and Dinner at the Mahoning Country Club, 710 E. Liberty St.
The Sept. 19 event, sponsored by ValleyCare Health System of Ohio, begins with a Women’s Health Expo from 4 to 6 p.m. that is free and open to the public.
The expo will include health screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol and bone density, as well as provide booths featuring products and services of interest to women. ValleyCare physicians, nurses and staff will provide information on a wide range of women’s health issues.
A ticketed dinner immediately follows the expo in the country club’s Grand Ballroom, where Smart will speak on “Overcoming Adversity” and share some of her story.
In June 2002, Smart was abducted from her Salt Lake City home in the middle of the night and the ensuing search to find her continued for nine months. In the years since her ordeal, Smart has become a highly visible advocate for change related to child abduction, recovery programs and legislation, and she is a correspondent for ABC News.
Tickets for the dinner are $30. Dinner seating is limited and reservations are required.
