Trial begins for man accused of killing father

POTTSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania man is on trial in the September shooting death of his father in what investigators say was an argument over money.

The Pottsville Republican & Herald reports a friend of 40-year-old Franklin Stumhofer Jr. testified Monday that Stumhofer called him after the shooting to say he’d shot his father.

Investigators say Stumhofer killed Franklin Stumhofer Sr., on Sept. 7 at the elder man’s home in West Penn Township, Schuylkill County, then drove to Berks County and fired three shots into a car driven by his brother-in-law.

Police say the younger Stumhofer told investigators he’d been having financial problems and went to his father, then fired at him through a door after having it slammed in his face.
