Over 60? Register at YSU for free classes

Registration for the College for the Over Sixty program at YSU will be taken from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 17 at the YSU Metro College in Southwoods Commons in Boardman.

The program waives tuition charges for people over age 60 who enroll in regular college credit courses at YSU. Enrollment is on a space-available basis. Costs not covered include technology/lab materials, parking and books. There is a $5 registration fee.

Registrants must be Ohio residents for at least the past 12 months. Students do not earn college credit for the classes. Students may register for up to 12 credit hours per 15-week semester and must register in person.

Johnson sets events in Austintown, Salem

U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson of Marietta, R-6th, plans two public events today in the Mahoning Valley:

10:30 to 11:30 am: Johnson will host a “Sit Down with Seniors” discussion in Austintown on guaranteeing the promise of Medicare and Social Security to current and future generations. Johnson will encourage those in attendance to join the discussion. Austintown Senior Center, 100 Westchester Drive.

3:30 to 4:30 pm: Johnson and State Rep. Craig Newbold will tour and meet with employees at NewTec, a Salem-based company. NewTec recently introduced a new chemical-free shopping- cart sanitizer that is getting a test run at a local grocery store. Johnson and Newbold also will be traveling to the company’s plant in Sebring to get a look at operations. NewTec Corp. is at 1052 W. State St., Salem.

Rec center closing

The Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center at YSU will be closed for cleaning starting next Monday until Aug. 19. The facility will begin fall semester hours at 2 p.m. Aug. 19.

Harvest Festival

Volant, Pa., is celebrating Harvest Festival on Aug. 18.

Shops that will have sidewalk sales include K.C.’s collectibles, Miss Scarlett’s Gift Parlor, A Little Bit Country and the Shoppe at River’s Edge.There will be Amish donuts and horse-drawn covered wagon rides at the Volant Mill.

There will be a car cruise, a DJ, door prizes, raffles, ice cream and baked goods, all hosted by Bethie’s Bake Shop and Eatery.
