Mahoning Valley can’t solve ValleyCats

TROY, N.Y.

Mahoning Valley showed it could compete with the top team in the New York-Penn League but Tri-City scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh to pull past the Scrappers 5-4 on Sunday.

The ValleyCats (34-13) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to four walks in the first five batters.

Joseph Wendle went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs for the Scrappers (23-23), who are five games behind Auburn in the Pinckney Division standings.

Joe Sever and Hunter Jones each singled and doubled for Mahoning Valley, which took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth.

James Stokes (0-3) gave up a run in one inning to get the loss while Travis Ballew (4-0) got the win in relief.
