Walk to End Alzheimer’s will help raise awareness
BOARDMAN
The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Chapter is signing up teams to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Oct. 13 in Boardman Park, 375 Boardman-Poland Road. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s Association care, support and research programs. Check-in is at 8:30 a.m., and the opening ceremony is at 9:30 a.m.
Individuals from all sectors of the community as well as caregivers and family members of those living with Alzheimer’s are encouraged to get involved.
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is an experience that asks participants to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions. Alzheimer’s is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals with Alzheimer’s will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s estimated 5.4 million Americans living with the disease. There is no treatment to stop or slow Alzheimer’s, but efforts to raise funds and awareness through the Walk to End Alzheimer’s are helping advance valuable research to find a cure while providing local support services and programs for families.
In addition, each walker will join in a tribute ceremony to honor those affected or those who have been affected by the disease. There is no cost to sign up, but the walk offers opportunities for teams and individuals to raise funds for Alzheimer’s through pledge-based efforts asking for donations from family, coworkers and friends or third-party special events that include garage sales, pasta dinners or bake sales.
The Greater East Ohio Area Chapter provides education, guidance, referral information and support for the 60,000 people with Alzheimer’s and 250,000 caregivers in the service area.
