Talk kicks off walk for mental health

The National Alliance of Mental Health Illness Mahoning Valley Walk Team Captain Kick-Off is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Austintown Township Park, 6000 Kirk Road.
Refreshments will be served for team captains and those who wish to be team captains at the event designed to learn how to organize a team, recruit and motivate walkers and raise funds.
For a reservation, call 330-207-1903. Team captains who register their teams before Tuesday and attend the kick-off are eligible to win a Kindle Fire.
The walk is Sept. 30 at Austintown Township Park. Proceeds go to NAMI Mahoning Valley, which includes Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
Cooking with beans

A cooking demonstration using local produce will be at noon today at the Northside Farmers Market, 1105 Elm St., across from Wick Park.
Participants will learn how to make tasty dishes with locally grown black beans, including a summer salad that also includes cucumbers and cherry tomatoes. Recipes for gluten-free chocolate cake and other dishes also will be available.
Invasion of Hope

Agape Assembly Church, 426 Nevada Ave. SW, will host a planning meeting at 6:30 p.m. Friday for a community outreach effort, Invasion of Hope 2012.
Agape is partnering with Seeking God’s Glory Church, Rock of Grace Family Ministries and other churches on the project. It includes outreach events on the West Side of the city, including neighborhood canvassing.
The Invasion of Hope 2012 Summer Outreach Festival will be Aug. 25 at Agape Assembly. The festival will include games, music, free food, inspirational messages, and giveaways.
The church is in the general area where violence, drug and gang activity are common. A killing recently took place in the area.

Lane restrictions

The Interstate 76 westbound exit ramp to state Route 534 is closed through mid-August for roadway construction, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation District 4.
The detour is Bailey Road to Mahoning Avenue. ODOT also announced the U.S. Route 62 between Mellinger and Raccoon roads will be closed Aug. 13 through Aug. 18 for a culvert replacement.
In Poland, U.S. Route 224 between Lowellville and Stymie roads will have various lane restrictions beginning Friday for pavement and culvert repairs. As part of that project, Route 224 will be closed at the Pennsylvania State line for a culvert replacement from Aug. 19 to Aug. 21.
Shooting in city

Police are looking for a city woman who reportedly fired a shot at her boyfriend during an argument with the 61-year-old man.
Police reports say the couple were arguing inside the man’s Stiles Avenue home Thursday because the man refused to go to the hospital and visit the woman’s mother. During the argument, the woman reportedly picked up a handgun from a night stand and fired a shot in the man’s direction.
Police noted a bullet hole in the door where the man was standing.
The woman was gone by the time police arrived at the home, but the man said she has a key and could return.
Police confiscated two firearms and ammunition from the house for safe keeping.
