The Health Occupations Students of America team from Laurel Technical Institute recently was recognized for outstanding accomplishments at the 35th Annual National Leadership Conference, which took place last month in Orlando, Fla.
During the conference, students attended educational symposiums, met with other student leaders, and competed in events to test their knowledge of health care topics.
LTI’s winners are Candace Hummel, fifth place, Medical Terminology, and top-five winner, Health Care Issues; Todd Heckman, Dawn Alexander and Jessica Roche, fourth place, Medical Reading; Dawn Falkner, third place, Epidemiology; and Kerri Roupe, second place, Researched Public Speaking. LTI’s HOSA students and editor Roupe were recognized for the organization’s award-winning newsletter, “HOSA Happenings.” Their adviser, LTI instructor Tracy Schliep, was awarded Outstanding Adviser.
HOSA is a national student organization of 120,000 members dedicated to promoting career opportunities in the health care field as well as supporting education and development of health care professionals.
Student chapters are organized for high school through college levels, encompassing a wide variety of health care professions. LTI’s HOSA team competed against more than 5,000 other students, representing colleges, universities and high schools from across the United States and Puerto Rico.
These same LTI students previously won first place in their categories in competition at the state level at the HOSA Pennsylvania Leadership Conference in Lancaster in March. LTI instructor Schliep was named Penn-HOSA Adviser of the Year, and “HOSA Happenings” was awarded first place in the state. LTI graduate Daniel Poppenhouse was keynote speaker for the state event.
The achievements of the students and their adviser will be celebrated in a special ceremony at LTI in August.
