Fundraisers for girl injured by Bobcat

Three benefits are planned to help to help Marisa Kay Vincent, the 7-year-old Howland girl injured in a Bobcat loader accident at her house in May.

On Aug. 9, a fundraiser will be during the Pittsburgh Steelers /Philadelphia Eagles football game at Buffalo Wild Wings in the Great East Plaza at Eastwood Mall in Niles.

A Scoop Night will be 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 13 at Bruster Real Ice Cream, 1300 N. State St., Girard. Twenty percent of proceeds will go to the effort.

An Aug. 31 Mahoning Valley Scrappers game and chili cook-off will also benefit the girl.

Swimmer drowns

NEW CASTLE, PA

A man drowned Thursday evening while swimming in a Lawrence County river. Vindicator broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV reported that two men were swimming back to shore from a small island in the Beaver River, off River Road in Taylor Township when Ronald Christopher Poloka, a man in his early 20s disappeared around 5:30 p.m.

Friends on shore called 911, and crews from several surrounding fire departments were called to the scene.

Poloka’s body was recovered later.

HazMat responds to leak at St. E’s

The Mahoning County HazMat Team and township firefighters were called to St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center Thursday night for an ethylene oxide leak.

Township Fire Chief George Brown said everything at the hospital worked as it’s supposed to.

The chemical, used to sterilize medical equipment, was at a low concentration. The area where the chemical was detected was sealed off when an alarm sounded to alert hospital personnel.

No patients were evacuated, the chief said.

Late last May, fire and Hazmat crews were called to the hospital for the same thing.

Man accused of rape

WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa.

Pennsylvania State Police accuse a West Middlesex man of raping a woman outside a church.

Ronald Lineberger, 46, of West Middlesex appeared in court on four charges including rape, making terroristic threats and assault.

Police say Lineberger assaulted a 29-year-old woman in the parking lot of a church on Pa. Route 318 in Lackawannock Township in April.

Brookfield levy talks

Trustees are having a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. today to discuss a proposed township levy. The meeting will be at the township administration building, 6844 Strimbu Drive.

North Avenue closing
