Scrappers spooked by Lake Monsters

Staff report

Burlington, Vt.

Despite turning three double plays and taking advantage of four Vermont fielding errors, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers fell to the Lake Monsters 7-5 on Thursday night.

Jairo Kelly singled to lead off the first inning and scored a few batters later on Charlie Valerio’s RBI single. Valerio leads the Scrappers (22-21) with 27 RBIs on the year.

Valerio scored in the fourth off an Aaron Siliga single and Richard Stock brought home Logan Vick to tie it at four.

The Scrappers got the go ahead run to the plate in the top of the ninth inning but were unable to complete the comeback.

Vermont starter Brent Powers settled in and recorded eight strikeouts through the first three innings before handing the ball to Nate Eppley who pitched three more solid innings for his third win of the season.

Mahoning Valley starting pitcher Jake Sisco was tapped for four runs on seven hits in four innings pitched.

Vermont shortstop Addison Russell hit his first professional home run — a solo shot in the sixth off James Stokes who took the loss.
