The Poland library turned its meeting room into a scientific laboratory for children during its program titled “Science Dreams” July 25.
A panel of librarians, including Boardman librarian John Yingling, Poland librarian Amanda Kollar and Assistant Children’s Services Specialist Starr Jones, made learning an interesting experience as they performed several experiments for their young audience members. Children were amazed and gave their insight as to why certain reactions occurred. At one time, Jones showed children why when pushing skew through the top of a balloon it will pop.
“There are molecules that expand when a balloon is blown up. The molecules at the top have not fully expanded, which is why when a skew is pushed through it the balloon does not pop,” Jones said.
The event included opportunities for children to not only gain a better understanding about science, but also a chance for children to participate and interact with other children.
Librarians stressed to children the importance of always remaining safe when preparing to do an experience.
“When you are doing an experiment, it is important to always get permission from your parents, or an adult, and to wear protection,” Yingling told participants.
