Boardman residents named to Honors List

Shannon Ewert (Honors List), Mark Odom (Honors List), and Elyssa Scarnecchia (Honors List) were awarded honors for the fall semester at Mercy College of Ohio. To be named to the Honor’s List, a student must achieve a grade point average of 3.3 or higher and be enrolled for 6-11 credit hours.

Family resource fair to help families connect with local agencies

The Precious Ones Family Resource Center is sponsoring their second annual family resource fair on Aug. 11 at the Greater Mill Creek Community Center located at 496 Glenwood Ave, Youngstown, Ohio. The event will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the gymnasium. Organizations will share details of how they can help local families. There will also be a variety of activities for children and parents. Prizes and food will be available for event participation. There will be free school supplies for every child who attends. School of Autism needs back-to-school supplies

The Potential Development Program’s School of Autism will be holding a back-to-school supply drive throughout the month of August. The items collected will be used in the kindergarten through eighth grade classes during the upcoming school year. Some of the items needed for the upcoming school year include crayons, colored pencils, #2 pencils, pens, paper, tissues, construction paper, scissors, 2 pocket folders, glue sticks and rulers. Donations can be dropped off at the School of Autism, 880 E. Indianola Ave. Youngstown, between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. A Potential Development representative will also be present at the Southern Park Mall Community Day on August 10 if you would like to drop donations off there.

Barbarian invasion is last chance to see medieval faire

The final weekend of the Great Lakes Medieval Faire will be held Aug. 12 and 13 from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. This theme weekend is Barbarians versus Romans so come dressed in your favorite toga or fighting gear. See such acts as Axel the Sot, bagpiper Barrett Taylor, and the flirtatious dance show with Lady Ophelia More. The Great Lakes Medieval Faire is located on State Route 534, seven miles south of the I-90 exit.

Bring one, take one plant exchange

The Ohio State University Extension Master Gardeners of Mahoning County will host “Bring One, Take One,” a perennial flower and seed exchange on August 11 at 9 a.m. at the Canfield Fairgrounds next to the pumpkin building. Any person who wishes to participate in the exchange should bring plants, seeds or bulbs to share in the exchange. Your items should be labeled so the new owner will know the name, planting instructions, color, and bloom seasons, etc. Invasive species will not be accepted. In addition to the plant exchange, there will be an exchange of shovels, gardening tools, aprons, ceramic pots, garden art, unopened soil, fertilizer and garden decorations. These items must be in good condition, clean and usable.

Women’s business association awards scholarships

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will welcome scholarship recipients and their parents to its Aug. 14 meeting at 6:30 p.m. in Canfield at A La Cart Catering.

In addition to presenting the students with their scholarship checks, the chapter will install its new officers for the 2012-2013 year. They are Shirley Pappagallo (president), Joan Lucansky (vice president), Marilyn Abramski (secretary) and Joyce Billock (treasurer).

Dinner will be croissant sandwiches of three varieties, pasta, fruit and tossed salads, strawberry shortcake and beverages for $14.50. Reservations will be due no later than Sunday by calling Jackie Fischio at 330-788-6634.

New Life Church in Poland to feed hungry

New Life Church will its third annual Goodness Invasion, a food distribution from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 18. at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown. The distribution is free, and open to residents of Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties in need of food assistance.

Tell me a story is family event

The Boardman library will be having a family story time from 10-10:30 a.m. this Wednesday as well as Aug. 16. There will be stories and fun for children or all ages. Parents are invited to join their children.

Be a shining star at library

The Boardman library is seeking individuals and group acts for their “Be A Shining Star” talent show for children of all ages. Bring friends and family to enjoy a frozen treat and applaud our talented performers. You can sign up now. The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Chalk it up to reading

The Boardman library will have an event for chalk stories and drawing activities outside at 10 a.m. on Aug. 29. This event is fun for the whole family. If it rains, the program will be held in the meeting room.

Parachute activities in the Boardman library

The public library will be having a day filled with parachute stories and games on Aug. 22 at 10 a.m. Parents are invited to join their children for the 30-minute story time.

Pac-Man for tweens

Play a live version of the “Pac-Man” game and win a prize if you have the highest score at the Boardman library on Thursday at 2 p.m. Wear comfy shoes so that you may be able to capture or chase classmates in grades 4-6.

Get your blood checked at the Boardman library

A blood pressure screening by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross is to be held at the library on Aug. 6 from 12:30-3 p.m.

Create a business plan at the Boardman library

Learn about writing and revising a business plan for your new or established business with a member of SCORE, Counselors to America’s Small Business, on Monday at 6:30 p.m. A librarian from the Information Services Department’s Business and Investment Center will introduce print and electronic sources that can provide information for developing your business plan.

Social media marketing meeting set

Tyler Clark from the Youngstown Business Incubator is the presenter for this program to be held at the Boardman library on Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. The term “social media” comprises a number of tools, including blogs, Twitter feeds and Facebook pages. Learn what combination of these tools is appropriate to help you reach your business goals and what comprises the audience for each of the social media tools, including how to convert readers and viewers to repeat customers.

Jigsaw puzzle swap

Do you have a jigsaw puzzle you’ve already conquered and want to trade off for a puzzle from another enthusiast? The Boardman library will host a jigsaw puzzle swap sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Puzzle enthusiasts that need information can contact the development office at 330-740-6086

Rod and gun club hosts Conservation Day

Lowellville Rod and Gun Club is holding its first Conservation Day on Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. It includes fishing, archery, boating and shooting with medals and prizes awarded. There will also be wildlife exhibits, informational displays, special guests from area agencies, and free refreshments. Summer skating lessons offered at the Ice Zone

All Saturdays through Aug. 11, The Ice Zone, 360 McClurg Road, in Boardman will offer ice skating lessons. Participants can choose from three classes: basic skills skating classes for all ages, Mommy and Me skating (Adult and toddler to Kindergarten aged child), and a special needs skating class.

The cost is $90 per student and includes six skating lessons, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and a $25 registration fee that includes one year of basic skills membership to the U.S. Figure Skating Association, a personal record book to track progress, accident and injury insurance, and a one-year subscription to the U.S. figure skating “Basic Skills Skating Magazine.” The total cost is $115 for regular programs or $140 for Mommy and Me.

Local doctor offers free health lectures

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on whole foods for a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle on August 9. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. The lecture is free and open to the public. East High School Class of 1964 reunion set

The Class of 1964 has organized a reunion for all classmates of the 1960’s of East High School on August 18 from 3-7 p.m. The reunion will be held at St. George Croatian Center on Vestal Road in Youngstown. The cost is $20 per person and you must register in advance. The registration deadline ends August 6th. Wearing your bike helmet could get you free ice cream

The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children.

During July and August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.

Find hidden treasures

The Boardman library invites children of all ages to search for hidden treasure buried in the sand. Find the treasure and receive a hand stamp or a stick. During library hours through summer.
