After-school program

The Salvation Army, 1501 Glenwood Ave., is inviting local students to register for its after- school program, providing homework help, tutoring and literacy and reading enrichment programs.
Through the program, the Salvation Army will provide interested students with one-on-one tutoring, musical instrument lessons, progress incentives and use of other Salvation Army youth programs.
Transportation and hot meals will be provided during the sessions. The cost is $15 for the entire school year, but the fee will be waived if students are registered before Aug. 17. Space is limited. For information, call the Salvation Army at 330-270-5999.
LGBT student event
Youngstown
Marc Adams, co-founder of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy group HeartStrong, will speak at a free event at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. John Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave.
Through HeartStrong, Adams has reached out to LGBT students attending religious educational institutions who are experiencing bullying and discrimination.
Adams’ most recent book, “It’s Not About You: Understanding Coming Out and Self-Acceptance” will be available at the event. Books will be autographed.

Weather-siren tests
Hermitage, Pa.
The Hermitage Fire Department will conduct its monthly test of the area’s weather-warning sirens at 10 a.m. Thursday.
The test will include activation of the Clark, Farrell, Sharpsville, West Middlesex and Wheatland weather sirens. Residents are asked to disregard the alerting sirens during the test.
