YSU group to celebrate Cinco de Mayo

The Youngstown State University Latino Student Organization will present “The Battle of Puebla Cinco de Mayo Celebration” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in the Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center.

The event will feature food, music and student performances, including Mariachi singer Miguel from Mexico, a band consisting of YSU and Canfield High School students and alumni, singing by YSU student Katie Hankins and Canfield High School student Karen Labra, and dancing by YSU students Dacmara Delgado and Anita Gomez.

Rocio Rosales, YSU assistant professor of psychology, will do a brief presentation.

The event is organized by the YSU Latino Student Organization, Los Buenos Vecinos, Sociedad Mutualista Mexicana, the YSU Hispanic Heritage Celebration Planning Committee, the YSU Office of Student Diversity Programs, and the YSU Office of Equal Opportunity & Diversity.

Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for the fifth of May, commemorates the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War.

In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
